CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The
Campbellsville University Tigers hosted the #21 Georgetown College Tigers Monday night in Mid-South competition. The Tigers fell to Georgetown 66-58.
Early in the contest, Georgetown accumulated a nine-point lead with the help of their defensive rebounds. A three-point goal shortly thereafter propelled the opposing Tigers to a double-digit lead. A
Keaston Brown layup cut into the deficit and a basket from
Jace Wallace brought the game back down to a single-digit trail. With four minutes remaining in the first half, Georgetown was outshooting the Tigers with a 60% field goal to Campbellsville's 34.6%. The half ended with a score of 38-25 with Campbellsville trailing.
At the half, the Tigers' shooting was still falling to that of Georgetown's. The opponents were putting up big numbers from the arc as they went six of 13 whereas Campbellsville was only two of ten. Wallace and Harding led the Tigers with six points apiece.
Jarius Key went into the half with a team-high five rebounds.
In he second half, Harding came out firing with consecutive three-pointers to put the deficit back into single-digits. Georgetown was persistent in keeping their lead though ensuring that Campbellsville was not to gain the lead for the first time of the night. Both teams scratched at each other's scores and, with ten minutes remaining, the score stood at 53-39 in favor of Georgetown. Campbellsville responded with an eight-point run to come within five points. Campbellsville had surpassed Georgetown in three-point field goals made with six minutes remaining. A dunk from Key paired with a Brown basket from the perimeter brought the separation to just four points with 1:43 left. Georgetown stayed collected and grew an eight-point lead going to the free throw line twice within the last 40 seconds after only seeing the stripe once all game before that. Although the Tigers outscored the rival Tigers by five in the second half, Georgetown took the Mid-South Conference win in a score of 66-58.
Campbellsville beat Georgetown in three-point field goals made and free throws by game's end. In the first half, Georgetown out-shot Campbellsville and outpaced the Tigers in overall field goal percentage. The Georgetown first half performance could not be surpassed by Campbellsville's strong second half. Harding tallied 18 points, Brown had 12 points, and
Peyton Broughton and Key both recorded eight points. Key had a career-high accumulating 14 rebounds and closest to follow was
Cameron Carmical with five of his own.
The Tigers travel next to Crestview Hills, Ky. to matchup against the #13 Thomas More University Saints. The game will be held on January 6
th beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
