Campbellsville cruises to another sweep over the Firehawks Tuesday evening

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - The Lady Tigers of Campbellsville University (14-4, 8-1 MSC) were at home taking on the Firehawks of the University of Tennessee Southern (11-17, 3-7 MSC). Campbellsville was fresh off of a straight set victory against crosstown rival Lindsey Wilson College while the University of Tennessee Southern' s last match was a loss to Freed Harman in a five-set thriller. Campbellsville had a light night Tuesday with a (3-0) sweep over UT Southern.

In the first set, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 9-3 lead behind some strong serving and aggressive swings. After a Fire Hawks time out, the Lady Tigers continued to dominate and build a 15-7 lead midway through the set.  The Lady Tigers were able to cruise the rest of the way as they closed out the Fire Hawks 25-18. Leading the way offensively was Molly Shannon with 6 kills.

In the second set, the Lady Tigers were determined to make some noise and that they did. They pounced on the Fire hawks building a 12-7 lead. At that point, Coach Johnston called a time out because something did not look right to her. After a brief huddle, the Lady Tigers came out with a purpose and determination.
They went on an eight-point run to pull away and left no doubt as they cruised to a 25-12 victory. Leading the way for the Lady Tigers was Hannah McGill as she secured 9 kills in both sets with no errors and a .450 hitting percentage.

In the third set, the Fire Hawks were not interested in getting swept as they kept things close early on. They took advantage of several unforced errors by the Lady Tigers and took a lead at 8-10. A thunderous kill by Paige Merrick allowed for the Lady Tigers to capture serve and they sent McGill to the service line and she took charge with some strong serves to give the Lady Tigers the lead at 12-11.

After, McGill's run, the Lady Tigers never looked back as they dominated the rest of the way. With the score 18-14, Cierra Merrick ran a slide to capture the point and that was all the momentum that was needed for the Lady Tigers to finish off the Fire Hawks. They closed out the set, 25-19 and completed the sweep to capture the victory.

Leading the way for Campbellsville was Shannon with 12 kills, McGill secured 11 kills and an impressive .425 hitting percentage with zero errors. The leader on the defensive side was Andrea Laboy with 17 digs.

The victory allows for Campbellsville to remain atop of the conference standings with a record of 15-4, 9-1 MSC. Up next for the Lady Tigers is Cumberland University out of Tennessee at home on Friday, Oct. 21st, at 7:00 PM.
