HENDERSONVILLE, TN - The Tigers (16-5, 10-2 MSC) were on the road tonight taking on the Lions of Freed Hardeman University (14-12, 4-8 MSC).Â
The Mid-South Conference top ranked team, the Lady Tigers, were on their second consecutive conference road match after defeating Bethel last night in straight sets. Freed Hardeman lost a five-set thriller last Tuesday night to Lindsey Wilson and are currently in the ninth position in the conference standings. Â
In the first set, the Lady Tigers started the match receiving and Jalyn Michael scored two quick kills to get things started. The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 10-5 lead as Molly Shannon and Marianne Cassiano set the pace offensively. The Lady Tigers continued to dominate throughout the set at they led by as many as fifteen points late in the set. The Lady Tigers would capture the first set by the score of 25-9. The trio of Cassiano, Shannon, and Michael each had 3 kills for the Lady Tigers. The Lady Tigers offense hit at a .476 clip while the defense limited the Lions to a negative, .229 hitting percentage.Â
The Lions came out in the second set determined to compete and that they did. They went toe to toe with the Lady Tigers for much of the first half of set. With the score tied at 16-16, Sofia Ramsey entered the match to serve and scored an ace. Casiano and Cierra Merrick followed with consecutive kills to open things up for the Lady Tigers. The Lions would claw their way back and tie things up at 20-20. An attacking error by the Lions would give the Lady Tigers set point at 24-21. The Lions would take advantage of the Lady Tigers as they committed a couple of errors while trying to put away the Lions but Molly Shannon would secure the kill that captured the victory in the second set. Cassiano would lead the offense with 6 kills and Andrea Laboy secured 13 digs through two sets on defense.Â
The third set was much like the second set as both teams clawed and fought their way through. With the score tied at 21-21, the Lions would capture two quick points and force the Lady Tigers to take a time out. During that time out, the Lady Tigers were able to regroup, refocus, and reset, and that resulted in two quick points as they tied the score 23-23. A kill by Hannah McGill would give the Lady Tigers, set and match point, and that is all that Shannon needed as she dropped the hammer to secure the point. The Lady Tigers completed the sweep by the score of 25-23.Â
Leading the way for Campbellsville were Shannon and
Paige Merrick as they scored double figures. Shannon had 13 kills and 10 digs, while setter Merrick had 40 assists and 10 digs. Cassiano scored 13 kills. Andrea Laboy would lead the defensive charge with 17 digs. The victory improved Campbellsville's record to 17-5, 11-2 MSC. Â
