OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – A second-half goal was enough for Covenant College on Saturday afternoon to best the Tigers and end their season.
Cold temperatures and brisk winds swept across the state of Indiana. Both teams, coming off less than a day's rest, started the match slow. Each team was adjusting to the 15 mph winds in the first 10 minutes with the only action being a Covenant corner.
In the 22
nd minute, Josh Quigley made the first save of the contest. A game of defense saw each club with two shots before the Scots keeper secured his first save after a
Sebastiano Musu free-kick in the 25
th. On the very next possession, Campbellsville fouled, giving Covernant a set piece outside of the box. Quigley again stood strong recording his second save.
In the last 10 minutes of the half, Campbellsville amped up the pressure. Antonio Quinta,
Gustav Oskarsson, and Musu all fired shots at the frame. Two shots were saved and one sailed above the crossbar. The half would close still scoreless. The Tigers placed three of their six shots on frame. The Scots had four shots, placing two on goal.
Covenant College would come out possessing early in the second half. Quigley would come off his line and make a sliding save in the 52
nd minute. The two would continue to jockey for possession until the 60
th, when Campbellsville had back-to-back corners. The Scots turned both opportunities away as wellas a Musu shot in the 67
th. Covenant quickly flipped the field and send a cross rolling across the 18-yard box. The Scots finished near post and take the 1-0 lead.
The two teams continued to create threats in the attacking third. Deep throw-in's, corners, and free-kicks would be awarded for both, but the score would remain the same. Campbellsville made a final push in the closing minutes as Quinta bent in a shot that was saved and then Nathan Schmidli had a shot that was turned away.
Campbellsville outshot the Scots 10-6. Quigley finished the match with three saves. CU wraps the season with a overall record of 10-7-1. They now await the NCCAA Tournament selection to see if their season continues.
