MARIETTA, Ga. – The Tigers journeyed to Marietta, Georgia to challenge Life University in a Mid-South Conference contest. Campbellsville won the tug-of-war match 66-63.
Malachi De Sousa began the match with a layup and drawing a foul.
Jarius Key followed his teammate with a layup, but then the Running Eagles climbed to a four-point lead over the Tigers with three consecutive jump shots.
Peyton Broughton's jumper brought the Tigers to a one-point trail.
Jace Wallace followed his teammate with a drive and conversion to take the upper hand at 20-19.
Ross Ryan's layup allotted the Tigers a three-point advantage, becoming Campbellsville's largest lead since the first three minutes of play. Wallace's free throws put Campbellsville at a four-point advantage, but the Eagle's buzzer beater three-pointer set the Tigers to lead by one at the half.
In the opening 20 minutes, the Tigers' shooting percentage registered at 46.4% trailing Life's 53.8%. Shots from the arc weren't falling as Campbellsville acquired 1 of 7 from deep. Broughton's nine points were the most for the Tigers followed by Wallace with seven and Ryan with six. Wallace had collected five out of the 15 rebounds thus far.
Life took the first punch in the second half by gaining a three-point lead, but
Sam Weining evened the score at 37 with a three-point field goal. Life went on a six-point run before Campbellsville decided to call a timeout and regroup. After trading baskets, Wallace's jumper reined in the Tiger's deficit to five. He then returned back to the basket twice to produce more layups for a one-point deficit. Ryan's layup secured the lead and
Keaston Brown's three from the top of the arc put the Tigers above the Running Eagles by three. Campbellsville stumbled a bit as Life made it to be a one-possession ballgame, but
Cameron Carmical responded with a three-point bucket. As a minute and a half remained, the Running Eagles were up by one. De Sousa's three-pointer swished through to earn Campbellsville the lead with a minute to go. Campbellsville would hold off Life's attempts to take the game and won 66-63.
Wallace finished the night with a double-double as he tallied 17 points and ten rebounds. Broughton trailed his teammate with 13 points and De Sousa ended with ten points. De Sousa and
Darius Harding totaled four rebounds each.
Campbellsville will continue traveling as they trek to the University of Tennessee Southern this Saturday February 12
th. The match will begin at 5 p.m. ET.
