PULASKI, Tenn. — The Tigers sought to return home with two road wins as they finished up their weekend trip against UT Southern Saturday night. The Tigers came out on top against the Firehawks, 70-64.
Malachi De Sousa started the first half with two back-to-back buckets for the Tigers, the first one being a three-pointer. Campbellsville led UT Southern 8-2 four minutes into the half.
Jarius Key then came in off the bench for the Tigers and made three layups in a row. Halfway through the first half, Campbellsville led 18-17. De Sousa made another three-point basket which gave the Tigers a four-point lead. The Firehawks started to rally back, tied up the game, and then the two teams started going back-and-forth with buckets. With less than three minutes left in the half,
Keaston Brown made a three-point basket which gave the Tigers a one-point lead. To wrap up the first half, Key blocked a shot which was rebounded and converted into a layup for De Sousa. Tigers led the game going into halftime, 32-39.
After the first half, De Sousa led the team with 12 points and Brown behind him with 7. Also, on the board for the Tigers was Key with 6 points,
Sam Weining with 3, and
Jace Wallace and
Darius Harding both with 2. UT Southern had more rebounds than CU and just barely a better field goal percentage shooting 39.3% compared to Campbellsville's 37.5%.
To begin the second half,
Jace Wallace made a layup extending the Tiger's lead, but the Firehawks answered that with a layup of their own. UT Southern went on to make a couple more shots which gave them the lead four minutes into the half, 38-34.
Cameron Carmical responded with a three-point basket which made the Tigers trail by one. The Tigers then found De Sousa at the free throw line where he made both shots and gave CU the lead back. Halfway through the second half, Carmical hit another three-point basket which gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game. CU then went on a 10-2 scoring run and had a 10-point lead with five minutes left in the game. Weining then hit a big three giving the Tigers a 13-point lead. UT Southern was able to cut into their deficit a little bit with a few trips to the free throw line. With a minute left in the game, Brown fouled out and sent UT Southern back to the stripe, 61-56. To wrap up the final minute of the game, the Firehawks sent Campbellsville to the free throw line four times in an attempt to cut into the lead. In those four trips the Tigers went 7-8 at the line which gave them a 70-64 win over UT Southern.
De Sousa led the Tigers with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Behind him was Wallace with 14 points, Carmical with 10, Weining and Key both with 8, Brown with 7, and Harding with 4 points. The Tigers shot 38.2% on field goals, 30.4% behind the arch, and 95.5% on free throws. The Tigers saw 22 bench points compared to the 9 from UTS.
The Tigers will be back in action Thursday facing #21 Shawnee State. The game will begin at 8 p.m. ET in Powell Athletic Center.
