LEBANON, Tenn. — The Mid-South Conference Pod hosted by Cumberland University saw the (RV) Tigers take the court to conclude their competition against the Life University Running Eagles. Campbellsville came out strong and claimed the win: 3-0.
To open the match,
Ryan Smith slammed home an ace. Life wouldn't back down though, and the set became a back-and-forth affair. Life took the lead with an ace of their own at 5-4, but after a Running Eagles error
Niklas Held responded in kind to take back the lead. After three consecutive errors, a
Jose Viera-Cerame ace, and a
Jakob Zum Kolk kill, the advantage for the Tigers grew to seven. From there, the Tigers didn't look back keeping a comfortable lead for the remainder of the set and taking it, 25-21.
The second set began much like the first with a contentious swapping of points. Further mirroring the first set sequence, Campbellsville began to pull away as both teams approached double-digits. The Tigers were able to keep a cushion of a handful of points for the remainder of the set behind stellar play from
Bastian Korreck and his five skills after posting only one in the first set. The Tigers improved their kill percentage to .375 from .167 in the first. Campbellsville emerged 25-17.
The third set would prove to be the final one as the Tigers swept Life. Like the sets before it, the final game of the match saw a competitive collection of initial points before the consistency of Campbellsville began to prove too much. Still, the Running Eagles didn't go down without a fight. An attack error brought Life to a single point deficit at 18-19. In response, the Tigers had
Bastiaan Van Houten spike back-to-back kills and Smith record an ace. After a couple scores by Life, Campbellsville put things away with Van Houten's and
Drew Sims' kills, 25-20.
The Tigers extended their win streak to five after dropping the first game of the season to Limestone University. The Tigers had a hit percentage of .258 doubling Life's .118. Campbellsville had four players (Korreck, Held, Van Houten, and Sims) with five or more kills. Smith set up nearly all converted attack opportunities with 29 assists.
Campbellsville men's volleyball's next contest will be back in Lebanon, Tennessee but this time facing off against Cumberland themselves. That match will be Tuesday February 15
th at 7 p.m. ET.
