LEBANON, Tenn. – The (RV) Campbellsville University volleyball team was hosted by Cumberland University Tuesday evening. The Tigers fell in set five against the Phoenix.
In the first set, the Phoenix took the lead early by capitalizing from the Tiger's errors. Campbellsville seemed lax early on in the set and allowed Cumberland to produce a hefty lead. However, the Tigers collected a few kills pushing the Phoenix to rally for the serve to bring down the deficit. Campbellsville brought it to a one-point game at 15-14 as the Tigers trailed. Cumberland used the Tigers receiving and serving errors to boost their lead to eight over Campbellsville and take the set.
The second set saw the Tigers have trouble receiving the ball from the Phoenix serve. Campbellsville evened the score at six before returning the serve back to the Phoenix. The Tigers took their first two-point lead of the set with a block from
Bastian Korreck. Cumberland gave the Tigers a tough set as both teams were clawing at each other's advantage. Campbellsville struggled to keep the ball in play going up for attacks. The Phoenix were trailing by two when
Drew Sims' kill put the Tigers two away from taking set two. The score was even at 24 when Cumberland slammed the ball toward the uncovered middle court. Campbellsville dropped set two 26-24.
Cumberland established an early lead on Campbellsville in the third set. The Tigers tied it up at five with a kill. Cumberland pressed forward for a 13-7 advantage over Campbellsville. The Tigers went on a run to decrease the deficit to one. However, Cumberland worked to maintain the upper hand. The scored evened at 17 and the Tigers took the lead at 18 with a kill. Attackers were not keeping the ball inside the playing field as much as they wished as their errors accumulated over time. In a nail-biting final serve, the Phoenix served the ball out of bounds to give the Tigers set three.
The fourth set consisted of both teams trading points for the lead. Campbellsville pushed Cumberland down to a five-point deficit at 16-11. The Phoenix gathered a couple blocks to begin knocking down the Tiger lead. Campbellsville was swinging hard and executing blocks to stay above Cumberland.
Niklas Held had a kill toward the left corner than was unreceived from the Phoenix opponent. He then followed up with an ace. Then, a deciding tip from Korreck sent the game into set five.
In the final set, both teams were tied at four before Cumberland took charge at the Tigers and established a larger lead at 9-6. Cumberland had a major block that pushed them closer to the finish line and Campbellsville worked to do the same. Cumberland took the final match due to an attack error on the Tigers.
The game came down to the wire and all major statisical categories for each team proved to be close. Held collected 12 kills,
Bastiaan Van Houten tallied ten, while Korreck and
Jakob Zum Kolk totaled six kills apiece. Korreck finished with 11 blocks as Kolk and Held established four.
Campbellsville will next host Central State University at Gosser Gymnasium this coming Friday. The match will begin at 7 p.m. ET.
