HATTIESBURG, Ms. – The Campbellsville University Baseball team continued their journey in Mississippi for another double-header match up against (RV) William Carey University on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers fell to William Carey University in both games.
Game One: Campbellsville 2, William Carey 11
Much like yesterday, it didn't take long for the Tigers to have runners on base. Kevin Whitaker reached via walk. Samino Uze sent a grounder to second base for an out but advanced Whitaker into scoring position. Another ground out to second by Noah Amenta sent Whitaker in to score the first run of the game. The Tigers took a 1-0 score over William Carey. William Carey capitalized with runners on base and tied the game at 1-1.
During the bottom of the third inning, William Carey hit a two-run inside-the-park homerun to take the lead over the Tigers, 3-1. With two runners on base, Chad McCann came in to relieve Zack Bromstead at the mound for the Tigers. In the bottom of the fourth inning, William Carey sent another runner across the plate taking a 4-1 lead over the Tigers. With two outs, Uze sent a pitch out to center field that was good enough for a single but was left on base.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, William Carey found the open spaces on the field sending more runners to home plate. Kam Robertson and Jackson Izatt both came in to pitch for the Tigers. At that point, William Carey had a 10-run advantage over the Tigers.
In the top of the seventh inning, Kye Seitz sent a pitch out to right field for a single and Kale Seitz came in to pinch run for him. Jorge Gonzalez reached first base off a fielding error sending Kale Seitz to second base. Josiah Clark reached first base on a fielder's choice. Gonzalez was out at second, advancing Ka. Seitz into scoring position. Uze sent a pitch out to right field, landing himself a double, scoring Kale Seitz and advancing Clark to second base. Uze and Clark were left stranded on base. The Tigers fell to William Carey, 11-2.
The Tigers had a combined total of 115 pitches thrown. 73 of those 115 pitches were strikes, giving the Tigers a .635 strike percentage. Two of the three hits belonged to Uze, the other belonged to Kye Seitz.
Game Two: Campbellsville 2, William Carey 3
Looking very similar to game one, Whitaker sent a pitch out to right field landing himself the first hit of the game and a single. On a wild pitch, Whitaker advanced to second base. Uze grounded out to second base, sending Whitaker into scoring position. Amenta had his first hit of the day sending a double down the right field line and scoring Whitaker. The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead over William Carey.
In the second inning, Logan Verble hit a single to shortstop and Tyler Belcher hit a single to right field, but the Tigers could not make their way around the bases. On the other hand, William Carey scored a run to tie the game at 1-1. In the third inning, Eddy Arteaga sent a pitch down the right field line that was good enough for a double. Clark also found himself a double after hitting one out to right center sending in Arteaga to score. The Tigers took a one-run lead over William Carey, 2-1.
A double play for the first two outs of the inning with Clark, Jacob White, and Amenta, and a quick third out left the Tigers in the lead going into the fourth inning. In the top of the fourth inning, White landed himself a hit and a single with a pitch sent out to center field. White was left on base. During the bottom of the fourth inning, William Carey launched a pitch over the fence for a homerun tying the game at 2-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, Amenta reached second base from a throwing error and Sam Fagerness came in to pinch run. Arteaga was intentionally walked. Fagerness and Arteaga both stole bases to advance into scoring position but were left stranded. Joseph Ranford came in to relieve Payne at the mound. Ranford struck all three batters out in the bottom of the fifth inning.
At the bottom of the sixth inning, Ryan McFarland came in to pitch for the Tigers. With one out, William Carey sent another pitch over the fence taking a 3-2 lead over the Tigers. During the top of the seventh inning, Uze added another hit to the Tiger's stats with a single. On a wild pitch, Uze advanced to second base. Arteaga was intentionally walked for the second time. The Tigers couldn't get their runners across the plate. The Tigers lost to William Carey, 3-2.
The Tigers had eight hits compared to William Carey's five hits. Each hit belonged to a different player. Payne, McFarland, and Ranford threw a combined total of 87 pitches. They had a .586 strike percentage.
The Tigers are scheduled to have their first home appearance of the season on Tuesday against Indiana University Southeast. The matchup is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET at HIG Field in Campbellsville.
