Tigers return to court ferocious in victory over Rio Grande

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The #13 Campbellsville men's volleyball team hosted the University of Rio Grande at Gosser Gymnasium Monday afternoon. The Tigers sweep the Red Storms 3-0.

In the first set, Rio Grande was first to serve and first to put numbers on the scoreboard. The Red Storms put up three points before the Tigers answered with a point of their own. Rio Grande led 7-5 when their hitting percentage sat at .667 versus the Tigers' .125 percent. Campbellsville evened the score at eight and continued to travel up in points. The Tigers went on a ten-point run with but were stopped at 22-12 by an attack error. The Red Storms couldn't seem to regain the lead as Mason Mckinney's kill closed the first set in a score of 25-16.

Rio Grande began the second set by earning the first point. However, the Tigers responded with another ten-point run. The Red Storms were able to win back the serve due to a Campbellsville error. Both teams traded the serve, but the Tigers accumulated more points in their time with continued possession due to Ho Yin Leung's run of aces. Toward the end of the set, Rio Grande were gaining ground from more Tiger errors. Campbellsville finalized set two in 25-14 with a kill delivered from John-Marcos Gonzalez

Set three started with a three-point Rio Grande lead. The Tigers jumped out on the Red Storms to tie the score at four. Rio Grande took the lead with a service error and traveled to 10-6 before a Rio Grande opponent had a service error of their own to give the Tigers the ball. Campbellsville evened the score at 11 with a kill from Leung as well as an accompanied ace from Drew Sims. The Red Storms managed to get ahead four more points before another service error gave the Tigers the serve. At 16-16, Campbellsville opted to capitalize from Rio Grande errors. The Tigers took set three and beat Rio Grande 25-21.

By game's end, the Tigers completed 33 kills to the 19 of the Red Storms. Serving was a strong suit of Campbellsville as they tallied 15 aces versus the six that Rio Grande posted. Leung finished the evening with nine kills out of his 12 attempts and Sims followed his teammate with six kills out of his 10 attempts.
