Midway makes back-to-back sweeps for the Tigers

MIDWAY. Ky. – The (RV) Campbellsville University Tigers traveled to Midway University to compete against the Eagles in a Mid-South Conference matchup. The Tigers took the 3-0 sweep over the Eagles.

Campbellsville was first to have a run of points greater than two when Bastian Korreck racked up three aces accompanied by a kill from Ho Yin Leung. The Tigers quickly propelled to a ten-point lead as Jakob Zum Kolk slammed a ball that was blocked out of bounds on the Eagle's side. Midway could not keep up as the Tigers pushed more point runs than Midway could produce. Niklas Held's back-to-back kills solidified his team's first set win. Held tallied four kills as Leung collected two out of the 11 Campbellsville had secured. The Tigers earned a .533 hit percentage that soared substantially above the .077 that the Eagles held.

In the second set, Midway mustered up five points to combat the Tigers' swift two points. Held responded to this deficit with a kill and then evened the score at six with an ace from the serving line. Campbellsville obtained their first lead of the set at 8-7 from an Eagle attack error. Midway climbed their way to a tied score of 15 with a couple kills and capitalization off Tiger error. Campbellsville took advantage of Midway's errors in return and established a four-point stronghold over the Eagles. The Tigers continued to feed off Midway's errors and took set two in a score of 25-19 with a final kill delivered by Held to the left corner. Held blazed the trail in this set by adding five more kills to his count and Zum Kolk followed him with three of his own. The Tigers racked up 13 kills within this set compared to the seven of the Eagles.

Campbellsville established a 6-0 lead with kills from Leung and Korreck before Midway called their first timeout of the final set. The Tigers' serve errors gave Midway their first two points before Campbellsville responded with a block from Held and Korreck followed by a kill from Korreck to mid-court. Midway was only four points short of Campbellsville, but the Tigers would push that gap to seven. The Eagles had a serve error that left the Tigers only two points away from the 3-0 sweep. John-Marcos Gonzalez's kill down the line finalized the win for Campbellsville in a 25-17 score.

By game's end, Campbellsville completed 38 kills to the Eagle's 17. Held accumulated 11 kills, Leung with six, and Kolk paired with Korreck for five apiece. The Tigers swung a .365 hitting percentage compared to the -.020 of their competitors. Out of the 38 total assists, Ryan Smith tallied 28.

The Tigers will be heading to the Mid-South Conference Pod hosted at Cumberland University. The team will compete both on Friday and Saturday, but Campbellsville's first match is set for Friday at 10 a.m. ET.
