Bulldogs best Tigers in home-opener

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University Baseball team had their first home game of the season against Union College Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers fell to the Bulldogs of Union College 10-0 after seven innings.

Campbellsville 0, Union 10

Although the weather was gorgeous, it was a tough afternoon for the Tigers. Things started promising as the Tigers ended the first half inning with a double play by Jorge Gonzalez, Josiah Clark, and Noah Amenta. In the bottom of the first inning, Logan Verble reached base after being hit by a pitch but was left stranded.

During the second inning, Union College's Clark sent a pitch down the left field line placing him in scoring position. The next batter sent one down the right field line scoring Clark and giving the Bulldogs a one-run lead over the Tigers. In the bottom half, Grant McQueary was given free bases after getting hit by a pitch. Josiah Clark then put McQueary into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Kye Seitz grounded out to second base moving McQueary onto third base. Unfortunately, the Tigers couldn't capitalize with McQueary in scoring position.

With one out and a runner on base, the Bulldogs' Karis sent a pitch over the fence. This gave the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead in the third inning. In the top half of the fourth inning, Zack Bromstead came in to relieve Mason Lee on the mound after three innings of work. The Tigers and Bromstead retired all three Bulldogs in eight total pitches. During the bottom half, Amenta sent a pitch out to left field giving himself the first hit of the game for the Tigers. Eddy Arteaga singled up the middle moving Amenta into scoring position. Alex Castaneda came in to pinch run for Arteaga and Clark reached base on a fielder's choice advancing Amenta to third base. However, both runners were left stranded on base.

In the fifth inning, Joseph Ranford came in to relieve Bromstead at the mound. With two runners on base, Karis hit another pitch over the fence for a three-run homerun taking an eight-run lead over the Tigers. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Cameron Castaneda reached base via walk but was left on. During the top of the sixth inning, Maddux Mateychuk came to the mound for the Tigers after the Bulldogs added another run to the scoreboard climbing to a 9-0 lead. After some miscommunication and errors from the defense, the Bulldogs scored another run and took a 10-run lead over the Tigers while shutting Campbellsville out.

In the seventh inning, Deshawn Welch came to the mound for the Tigers. In the bottom half, Clark sent a pitch to the fence, which was good enough for a double. Kye Seitz hit a high-fly ball to first base advancing Clark to third base. The Tigers' hopes to score were dashed as Clark was left on base. The Tigers fell to Union College, 10-0.

The Tigers had just three hits on the day each belonging to a different player: Amenta, Arteaga, and Clark. Campbellsville gave up nine hits to the Bulldogs. The Tigers had a combined total of 124 pitches throwing .589 strike percentage.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday to take on Lourdes University in Campbellsville, Kentucky. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m. ET.
