Tigers split first day of series against Gray Wolves

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University baseball team matched-up against Lourdes University on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers split the afternoon 1-1 with the Gray Wolves.

Game One: Campbellsville 5, Lourdes 3

To begin the game, Brady Tedesco put the first batter away with a strikeout. The next two batters were put out with plays in the field by Noah Amenta and Jacob White. The Tigers were unable to produce runs as the Gray Wolves shut down the top of the lineup. Tedesco returned in the top of the second to produce two more strikeouts for the Tigers and forced another fly ball for Josiah Clark to collect.

Chad McCann appeared on the mound for Tedesco in the top of the third. The first batter to face McCann dumped the ball over shortstop for a double. McCann earned his first strikeout of the afternoon as one of the Gray Wolves left the plate looking. Center fielder, Kevin Whitaker, put out one Lourdes player with a caught fly ball and with a bullet throw to second base to get the untagged baserunner. On the return, Sam Fagerness was the first Tiger to appear on the base pads with a single up the middle. However, Campbellsville was unable to capitalize from the runner on and the fourth inning saw the score still 0-0.

The Gray Wolves began the fourth with two runners on due to the Tigers' errors. As runners stood in scoring position, Lourdes pushed the bases loaded as a single to McCann left no open play. A soft line out to White allowed a runner to score for Lourdes as the ball fell out of his glove, but he ensured the out at third base. McCann shut out the next two batters to cap off the inning at 1-0 in the Gray Wolves' favor.

Clark placed himself on first base with a hard-hit ball back to the pitcher who was unable to execute the force out. Amenta followed his teammate by pulling the ball to the left of shortstop which pushed Clark to second base as well as earning first for himself. Clark got caught in a run-down that put him out on his return to second. The inning closed out as the Tigers left the runner on with a backwards strikeout.

In the bottom of the fifth, Grant McQueary sent one past shortstop to warrant first base for the Tigers. A sacrifice bunt from White advanced McQueary to second. Fagerness propelled a ball to short that moved McQueary to third and Fagerness collected first on a fielder's choice. With runners on the corners, Kye Seitz came in to pinch hit for Whitaker. Seitz reached first on a wild pitch and McQueary scored. Logan Verble found himself on first with a high throw from short that scored Whitaker and Fagerness. The Tigers headed into the sixth inning 3-1 for their first lead of the contest.

Deshawn Welch entered the game with a fresh arm to relieve McCann. Welch was then switched out for Ryan McFarland. With his first batter, he was able to turn the double play at second to cap off the Lourdes batters. Fagerness went three for three at the plate as his line drive up the middle had the bases loaded. Verble doubled to the right field line and scored both Fagerness and Jeremiah Lebron.

With Campbellsville ahead by four runs in the fifth, they collected two outs early on, but Lourdes then scored a run from a sacrifice fly ball. Another Tiger error left Lourdes with another run. However, Campbellsville finished off the Gray Wolves 5-3.

The Tigers racked up eight hits over the course of the game whereas Lourdes tallied five. Although the Tigers traded a few pitchers out, Campbellsville worked together to finish with a .660 strike percentage compared to the Gray Wolves' .637 percentage. Verble finished the competition holding the 4 total RBIs that the Tigers had accumulated.

Game Two: Campbellsville 2, Lourdes 3

Lourdes jumped out early with a triple from Campbellsville's error. That runner scored on a wild pitch, but the Tigers allowed no more as they closed the top of the inning to get the batters rolling. Campbellsville put themselves on the diamond with Fagerness' hard-hit to shortstop. McQueary reached first on a fielder's choice and Fagerness was put out at third.

After a scoreless second inning, Lordes collected two more runs in the third due to passed balls and Campbellsville inability to prevent the runners from scoring. The Tigers retired the third inning as they were shut out on the offensive return. Campbellsville knocked down each batter that appeared in the fourth with plays made by Alex Castaneda, Jeremiah Lebron, and McQueary. On the return, Clark received a walk, but the Tigers were unable to scratch at the score still trailing by three runs.

The Tigers answered in the field by collecting three outs out of the four batters who stepped to the plate to start the fifth. As they went swinging, Lebron singled swiftly up the middle and fellow Tiger Amenta urged him to second. Tyler Belcher's major sacrifice bunt put Lebron and Amenta in scoring position. Castaneda earned himself an RBI as he scored Lebron to have the Tigers trail by two runs. Fagerness tallied a big sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Amenta and advance Castaneda to third. The Tigers entered the sixth following close behind Lourdes 3-2.

With one out, the Gray Wolves tripled to center field. The following batter grounded to shortstop and a throw from Castaneda to Belcher put the runner out at home. A third out to short stop for the force out at second allowed the Tigers to return to their bats. Campbellsville made contact on the ball but were unsuccessful in knocking at their deficit. Mason Lee came in to pitch for Cale Thompson in the seventh. His throwing knocked down two Gray Wolves with strikeouts and a ground out to short stop. Campbellsville racked up three deep hit balls but could not even the score ending the contest.

By game's end, the Tigers had collected four hits to the Gray Wolves' five. RBIs were granted to Fagerness and Castaneda which resulted in the two runs. Lourdes bested the Tigers in strike percentage as Campbellsville finished the night with a .649 percent compared to the Gray Wolves' .710 percent.

The Tigers will reappear at H.I.G. Baseball Field tomorrow to continue hosting Lourdes University. The game is projected to start at 1 p.m. ET if weather permits.
