Tigers unable to topple Grenadiers

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Campbellsville Tigers baseball team traveled to New Albany, Indiana to take on #17 Indiana University Southeast on Tuesday night. The Tigers fell to the Grenadiers, 16-7.

Kevin Whitaker led off with a base hit to right center to start the ball game. Unfortunately, Whitaker was quickly retired from a double play to go into the bottom half of the inning. The Grenadiers capitalized on early errors from the Tigers to load the bases in the bottom of the first inning. The Grenadiers doubled to right center and sent two runners across the plate to take an early two-run lead over the Tigers. Another seven runs would be added to the scoreboard for the Grenadiers taking a nine-run advantage. With two outs, Joseph Ranford came in to relieve Luis Lopez on the mound. The Grenadiers retired all three of the Tigers to start the second. In the bottom half of the inning, the Grenadiers sent three more runners around the bases and took a 12-run lead over the Tigers. 

Jacob White singled to left field to lead off the third inning. Logan Verble reached base via walk and advanced White to second base. Whitaker got on base from a fielder's choice and moved White into scoring position at third base. Jorge Gonzalez singled through the left side to score White and advance Whitaker to second. Tyler Belcher singled through the left side to score Whitaker and advanced Jorge Gonzalez to second. Josiah Clark came in to pinch run for Belcher. Cameron Castaneda was given free bases off a walk and advanced Jorge Gonzalez and Clark up a base. With the bases loaded, Noah Amenta doubled to left center and scored Jorge Gonzalez and Clark. Samio Uze doubled to left center and scored Cameron Castaneda and Amenta. At that point, the Tigers were able to cut the Grenadiers' lead in half. White would then reach base via walk. Uze and White were left on base to go into the bottom of the third inning as Ryan McFarland came in to relieve Ranford at the mound. The Tigers retired all three of the Grenadiers to go into the fourth inning. 

Verble reached first off an infielder's error and advanced to second on a wild pitch to begin the fourth inning. Jorge Gonzalez was hit by a pitch and given free bases but no Tiger offense would muster in the frame. During the fifth inning, Uze reached via walk but was left stranded on base. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Grenadiers sent two more runners around the bases and took an eight-run lead over the Tigers. Whitaker was given free bases after being hit by a pitch to begin the sixth inning. Jorge Gonzalez tripled down the left field line and scored Whitaker. Mason Lee came to the mound for the Tigers in the bottom half of the inning. The Grenadiers scored yet another run to return to an eight-run advantage. 

With two outs in the seventh inning, White singled through the left side but was left on base. Throughout the bottom half of the inning, the Grenadiers sent another runner across the plate for a nine-run lead. During the eighth inning, the Grenadiers retired all three Tigers to go into the bottom half. Chad McCann came to the mound for the Tigers. With a runner on second, the Tigers hold the Grenadiers from scoring to continue into the ninth inning. To begin the night inning, Amenta doubled down the left field line but was left on base to finish the ball game. The Tigers fell to the Grenadiers, 16-7.

The Tigers had nine total hits in the ball game with Jorge Gonzalez, Amenta, and White each having two. The Tigers had five different pitchers with a combined total of 180 pitches and a strike percentage of .594. 

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday at HIG Baseball Field in Campbellsville, Kentucky against University of the Cumberlands. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. ET.
