Rain ends Tigers loss to Lourdes

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.- The Campbellsville University Tigers hosted the Lourdes University Gray Wolves Sunday afternoon. A rain delay in the sixth inning called the game and the Tigers fell 3-2.

As the game began, Zion Payne stepped on the mound to claim the second batter with a "backwards K". The top of the lineup was retired as the defense stood behind Payne with put outs to Alex Castaneda and Sam Fagerness. Campbellsville dropped the top of their lineup to the Gray Wolves, but didn't give up there.

On the return, Lourdes placed runners on the corners. However, Campbellsville shook their way out the situation to return to the bats. Josiah Clark singled down the right-field line and then stole second moments later. Jorge Gonzalez collected an RBI as the Lourdes' pitcher acquired an error and led to Clark being the first on the scoreboard. Noah Amenta sacrificed his at bat to move his teammate around the diamond. Cameron Castaneda slashed to the left side for an RBI that scored J. Gonzalez. The Tigers took the upper hand of two runs to nil.

The Gray Wolves suffered two outs early in top of the third as they trekked toward the Tigers. Lourdes mustered up a run by capitalizing from Campbellsville error as well as hitting placements. A play made by Alex Castaneda closed the inning 2-1. Campbellsville worked at the plate to award themselves the base pads but were unsuccessful as they were put out in the field.

The fourth inning was unrewarding to both teams. The Gray Wolves changed the dynamic as they advanced off singles between the Tigers' second baseman and the bag. A fly ball to the center field wall propelled the Gray Wolves to lead by one. Deshawn Welch appeared on the mound to relieve Payne. A swinging strike three earned Welch the "K" and Campbellsville returned to the plate.

Action was slim in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth inning. The Tigers trailed by one in the bottom of the sixth when they opted for a game of small ball. Jeremiah Lebron executed a short bunt to award himself first base. As Clark was up to bat, the game had been delayed due to lightning. The lightning persisted and the game was called at 3-2 for Lourdes with the tying run at first base. A seven-inning game can be final after five due to lightning if unable to continue.

With the contest concluded, Campbellsville tallied a .621 strike percentage compared to the Gray Wolves' .518 percent. Hitting was not the Tigers' strong suit Sunday afternoon as they left runners on. Campbellsville hit a .200 against Lourdes' .400 percent with runners on. In scoring position, the Tigers hit at a .333 compared to the Gray Wolves' .375 percent more often than Lourdes had. Clark and Cameron Castaneda went 2-1 on the day finishing at a .500 hitting percentage.

The Tigers will host Mid-South opponent Bethel University on Friday, March 11th. The game will begin at 2 p.m. ET and can be viewed via CUSports Network.
