CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY. – The (RV) Campbellsville Men's volleyball team played at Gosser Gymnasium on Tuesday night. The Tigers took over against the Phoenix of Cumberland University in four sets.
After scoring the first point of the set, the Tigers went on a 5-0 run. Kills by Eric Heller and Drew Sims continued to keep the Tigers in the lead. Several ball handling errors on the Phoenix helped the Tigers lead 16-12. The Tigers rattled off three points to take a four-point advantage over the Phoenix. Later in the set, errors from the Tigers set their lead to just one point. Bastian Korreck's kill stopped the Phoenix from putting them at a three-point deficit. The Phoenix continued to score on the Tigers and went ahead two points. The Tigers could not answer back and fell to the Phoenix, 26-24. The Tigers had 13 kills and five total blocks in the first set.
To begin set two, Ryan Smith answered the Cumberland opening point with a kill of his own. Drew Sims followed suit and brought the lead to the Tigers. Errors from the Phoenix gave the Tigers a three-point lead. Errors continued to mount for the Phoenix giving the Tigers a 9-6 advantage. Jason Camacho, Korreck, and Heller each posted kills to take the Tigers to a four-point lead over the Phoenix. Cumberland cut their deficit back to four points but were stopped by Smith and Sims as The Tigers went on a three-point run and took a six-point lead. The final point was given to the Tigers after another ball handling error on the Phoenix. The Tigers took the second set, 25-19.
Kills by Camacho and Heller helped the Tigers take the first two points of the third set. In six serves, Heller had four aces. This gave the Tigers an 11-2 lead over the Phoenix. After a long rally, Ho Yin Leung gave the Tigers another point with a kill. The Tigers and the Phoenix had several errors in the middle of the set seemingly trading mistakes back-and-forth. The Tigers didn't let the errors stop their drive and would eventually cement a 10-point lead at 23-13. The Tigers would win the third set, 25-14.
The Phoenix grabbed the first point of the fourth set, but the Tigers swiftly answered back. The Tigers and the Phoenix remained tied through the first 10 points of the set. After a two-point deficit, kills by Korreck and Heller brought the lead back to the Tigers. Sims and Leung added two more points to the scoreboard and gave the Tigers a four-point advantage. The Tigers didn't look back the rest of the final set, maintaining a comfortable cushion and capturing the match behind a score of 25-20.
The Tigers had 48 kills and 15.5 total blocks on the evening. Sims had 12 kills, while Korreck and Heller had 11 kills each. The Tigers had a .288 kill percentage.
The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow to take on Lawrence Tech (Mich.) in Campbellsville, Kentucky. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
