DES MOINES, IA – For the first time in program history the Tigers were able to win their first match at the NAIA National Championships with an upset in their opening round match 3-1.
The Tigers started to a slow start in the first set. Vanguard jumped out to a 8-3 lead. Campbellsville was able correct their mistakes which mostly came from service errors in that set. They closed the set to close it to a three point margin but fell 25-22.
After the first set, it was all Campbellsville from there on in. The Tigers did not allow Vanguard any breathing room and only allowed them a maximum of 20 points over the next three sets. Campbellsville would go on to win those final three sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-17).
Campbellsville had four athletes in double figures on kills.
Jason Camacho led the charge with 12,
Ho Yin Leung had 11,
Niklas Held had 11, and
Eric Heller had 10 kills.
Defensively, Camacho and
Jay Montalvo were able to keep the Tigers out of trouble with a combined 15 digs between the duo with Montalvo collecting nine of the 15.
Bastian Korreck proved why he's the nation's leading blocker, the freshman had eight total block assists on the night.
Ryan Smith was all over boths sides of the ball. Smith had 43 assists, nine digs, six blocks, and one kill.
With the Tigers win, they will turn back around tomorrow to face William Penn for another 4 p.m. matchup.
