DES MOINES, IA – The Tigers had a statement to prove, and they did just that by sweeping the Statesmen of William Penn 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-23) to win the group stage and move onto Friday's semi-final match.
Campbellsville was once again led by
Jason Camacho's offense as he had 12 kills on the afternoon.
Ho Yin Leung was right with Camacho on the offensive side of the ball also tallying 12 kills. The pair were also able to collect five digs on the night to transition defense into offense.
In the first set, the Tigers jumped on all of the Statesmen mistakes and were able to capitalize and defeat them soundly (25-14). In the second set, William Penn attempted to make things more interesting for
Eric Snyder's squad but were still able to come out on top with a mid-set run to win (25-20).
The Tigers faced adversity late in the third set with William Penn's crowd coming alive and bringing the Tigers to a late set timeout. Campbellsville was down 19-17 and then jumped out to a 21-19 lead. Campbellsville did not look back from that point and pulling off the sweep.
Ryan Smith has shined so far this tournament. Smith added 33 more assists to his week along with four kills, four digs, and two blocks.
Jay Montalvo has been the star that the Tigers have needed on both sides of the ball. Montalvo almost earning another double-double with six assists and eight digs.
Jose Viera-Cerame was one who did not shine with big numbers, but late in the third set he had two key digs which turned into Campbellsville points.
The Tigers will now have a rest day on Thursday and will not return to the court until Friday April 15
th.
