Weather cuts battle short, Tigers win 8-7 over Blue Raiders

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Campbellsville University baseball team traveled Highway 55 to face-off against Lindsey Wilson College Wednesday night. The Tigers took the weather-shortened game 8-7.

To start the contest, Campbellsville suffered from two outs quickly. Noah Amenta collected a single, but nothing came from it. The Blue Raiders played small ball to move a runner around the diamond. A single up the middle scored the Blue Raider to put the Tigers at a deficit.

The Tigers' time at the plate was abrupt as the next three batters to appear were shut out. Lindsey Wilson returned in the box and placed themselves on the bases. However, the Blue Raiders reverted to defense as Campbellsville put a stop to Lindsey's offensive opportunity.

In the top of the third, Campbellsville was at a disadvantage of two outs. Samio Uze worked the count to gain a walk down the first base line. Jorge Gonzalez followed his teammate with a single to advance Uze. Amenta collected another single that allows Uze to reach home plate. Jacob White continued the two-out rally as his double scored Gonzalez. Cameron Castaneda followed through with another single that scored both White and Amenta. Zack Bromstead came on to the mound for Luis Lopez and forces the next three batters into put outs.

Chad McCann started the fourth inning off with a double to center field, but a pitching change from Lindsey Wilson put a stop to the Tigers' hitting. The Blue Raiders attempted to respond to their deficit but were unsuccessful.

Amenta continued his valiance at the plate as he hit another ball out to the grass to amass another single. White followed up with a double that placed them both in position to score. Castaneda stepped into the box with the intent to bring batters in. His double to center field poised Castaneda a two-run RBI as Amenta and White ran in. in the latter half of the fifth inning, wild pitches and a walk loaded up the bases for Lindsey Wilson. The Tigers were in a uncomfortable situation when another wild pitch allowed the Blue Raiders to score. Campbellsville only had one out under their belt when Lindsey acquired a triple that scored two runs. Ryan McFarland stepped onto the hill to relieve Bromstead. The Blue Raiders scratched at the Tigers' score until they trailed by one. A single through the left side batted runners in to propel Lindsey ahead of the Tigers.

Campbellsville returned in the top of the sixth by placing runners on. Gonzalez drove his ball to the left side of the field which allowed Kevin Whitaker to score for a tie score.  Lindsey Wilson's advanced were denied in both the sixth and seventh inning. Gonzalez amassed a solo homerun to place Campbellsville one run above Lindsey Wilson. With that, weather put an end to the battle and Campbellsville walked away with the win 8-7.

The Tigers were able to produced more than double the amount of hits compared to the Blue Raiders: 11 to five. Gonzalez and Amenta both led the way for Campbellsville with three hits each. Castaneda had four RBIs (the most by an individual on either team) on two hits.

The Tigers will continue their Mid-South conference quest as they take on Georgetown College next weekend. The first competition will be held April 15th at 7 p.m. ET.
