CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville University Baseball team faced-off against Midway University Tuesday evening. The Tigers were victorious in their 2022 regular season closer 8-2.
The first inning was actionless as neither team was able to place runners on the bases. Midway struck first as they acquired a single that found its way through right center in the second inning. Campbellsville answered this punch with some of their own as they put out the next two at bats.
Ryan McFarland stood on the mound and collected two strikeouts with one being a backwards K. In the bottom of the inning,
Josiah Clark earned a walk down the first base line. With two outs, Clark stood on second and misjudged a pass ball and retired the inning as he was picked off at third base.
Zack Bromstead came on the mound in place of Ransford. Midway moved a runner all the way to third and second and into scoring position with two outs. A fly ball out to
Jacob White kept the Eagles to no runs. The Tigers suffered from two outs, but
Kale Seitz singled to right field to get the bats going.
Samio Uze tripled to right center to score Seitz allowing the Tigers to rise above the Eagles.
Campbellsville put away Midway in four batters as
Deshawn Welch came into the contest.
Noah Amenta started off for the Tigers with single between second and first base. After Clark walked, Artega's single put runners in position to score.
Cameron Castaneda's sacrifice fly ball scored Amenta. The Tigers continued to play it smart on the bases as Clark scored on a wild pitch. Campbellsville held a three-run lead going into the fifth inning.
Joseph Ranford came onto the hill to relieve
Deshawn Welch. Ranford's pitching locked down the inning to only four batters appearing at the plate. Uze could have possibly had a triple if his ball did not bounce out of play with his deep line drive to right field. However, Uze reached third on a passed ball. White singled to center field which placed him and Amenta on the corners. As White was on his way to second, the Eagles overthrew the defender on the steal. Amenta scored on the overthrow to increase Campbellsville's lead.
Another pitching change occurred as
Luis Lopez relieved Ranford. A Midway batter walked and continued to make his way around the diamond on wild pitches. Midway lined out to center field, however, White made a diving catch to secure the first out. The runner on third scored and scratched at the Eagle deficit.
The first at bat in the bottom of the sixth consisted of an Arteaga homer over the right-center wall.
Chad McCann earned first base in a walk and made it to second on a stolen base. Seitz stepped up to the plate and ripped the pitch to the same spot as Arteaga for a two-run RBI.
Mason Lee had come into the contest in the previous inning to pitch for the Tigers. In the seventh inning, Lee forced the Eagle batters into a strikeout and two putouts. Campbellsville was unable to add any more runs to their score.
Both teams put away the batters in three to finish the match. Campbellsville solidified the win 8-2 over the Eagles. Seitz finished the night with a .667 with two out of the five total RBIs. The Tigers finalized a .647 strike-percentage as product of their seven pitchers. Each team faced 36 batters a piece, but Campbellsville's strike percentage remained higher than the Eagles' .566.
The Tigers closed out their regular season schedule with Tuesday's win. Campbellsville will host the Mid-South Conference opening round Thursday, April 28
