BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Campbellsville University Baseball team played Georgetown College Saturday afternoon in the Mid-South Conference Baseball Championship Tournament. The Tigers utilized a huge final frame to storm past the rival Tigers, 11-5.
To begin the game,
Jorge Gonzalez singled up the middle to get the Tigers going.
Noah Amenta followed him down the first base line collecting a walk.
Jacob White's hard hit to third base turned into a double play for Georgetown to end the inning.
Brady Tedesco was the one to stand on the mound for the Tigers defense. Tedesco's two strikeouts along with a play by
Kale Seitz shut down the top of Georgetown's lineup.
Eddy Arteaga doubled down the right filed line to kick things off in the second inning.
Josiah Clark entered the match to base run for Arteaga.
Alex Castaneda scored Clark with an RBI single to right field. With two outs, runners were in scoring position as Castaneda and Seitz stood on second and first.
Samio Uze found a gap through the right side to amass an RBI single. Defensively, Campbellsville eased up which caused Georgetown to score two runs to match the Tigers.
In the top of the third, the Tigers suffered two outs early on. Arteaga took a solo trip around the diamond as his homerun to right center put Campbellsville on top. Back in the field, Georgetown were able to put the bat on the ball, but Campbellsville quickly accumulated three outs to close the inning.
After a quiet fourth inning, Georgetown hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth. This at bat switched the lead from the Tigers to Georgetown and put the rival Tigers at a two-run advantage. In the sixth, Campbellsville could not scratch at their discrepancy.
Joshua Lambert came into the match to relieve Tedesco on the mound. A Georgetown batter singled up the middle and stole second base while the Tigers only had one out. However, Campbellsville shut out the last few batters to hold Georgetown at five runs.
With two outs, Georgetown put Campbellsville in a nerve-wracking situation as runners stood on the corner bags. Castaneda finalized the third out by making the play at first. As Campbellsville was at bat in the eighth inning, Castaneda's double down the line left Seitz with the opportunity for an RBI. Seitz followed through with a clutch hit as he scored Castaneda.
Zack Bromstead stepped on the hill for Lambert during Georgetown's share of the inning. Bromstead's first opponent suffered a strikeout, and the remaining two outs were made by Uze and Bromstead.
In the final inning,
Jorge Gonzalez and Amenta were both hit by pitch. White scored Gonzalez with a single to left field to tie up the game at five runs. Even with the pitching change, the Tiger offense kept rolling as Arteaga hit a sacrifice fly, Clark pinch hit tripling to right center, and
Grant McQueary singled all bringing home runs. Suddenly, Campbellsville was ahead by three. Then, Seitz smacked his fourth homer of the season sending in three more runs to put the Tigers ahead 11-5. All Campbellsville needed was three outs to advance and that's exactly what they got with a caught foul ball, a fly out, and then a pop-up.
Seitz led the Tigers with four RBIs while Arteaga, Castaneda, White, and McQueary all had two. Seitz also hit at a .750 for best on the team followed by Arteaga and Castaneda at .500. Campbellsville had nearly ten more hits than the rival Tigers: 16-7.
The Tigers will now take on the Cumberland University Phoenix at 8:30 p.m. ET Saturday night and the winner there will be one of four remaining teams in the MSC Baseball Championship Tournament.
