CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The #25 Lady Tigers dropped their home-opener Saturday afternoon to #10 Southeastern University, 4-1.
Both offenses were tentative in the opening minutes due to the balance of competition. Campbellsville maintained resolute as they played tight defensively to keep the ball from their goal. In a moment of keenness, the Fire advanced toward the Campbellsville goalkeeper,
Rirei Sasaki. As the Fire attempted to score,
Lauren Woodcock had an impressive block to keep Southeastern from progressing. Campbellsville worked toward the Fire's goal with persistence.
Agatha Nimene took Campbellsville's first shot on goal which was saved. The Fire counteracted using their momentum to get ahead of the Lady Tigers with less than ten minutes remaining in the half. The scoreboard showed 1-0 as the half came to a close.
At the half, Southeastern had taken a total of four shots compared to Campbellsville's two shots. Both teams had taken one shot on the goal, however, the Fire's shot found the net.
In the first few moments of the second half, the Lady Tigers pushed toward the opposing goal. The Fire maintained a taut defense and Campbellsville was awarded a corner kick. Southeastern counteracted and took their first shot toward the Lady Tiger goal which was saved by Sasaki. Offense was infrequent until the Fire increased the Lady Tiger deficit adding another goal to their lead. Campbellsville did not allow their shortfall to cloud their vision of scoring. The Lady Tigers tallied three shots but were unable to connect with a goal. The Fire did not ease up pushing ahead by acquiring another goal. Campbellsville was awarded a free kick with six minutes left and
Jenna Croteau's shot was sent between the Southern goalkeeper's legs for the score. Southeastern reversed moments later though with an additional goal past the Campbellsville goalkeeper. The match ended 4-1 in favor of the Fire.
By game's end, Southeastern had taken 15 total shots and eight of them had been on goal. Campbellsville took seven shots with only two of them being accurately on goal. Croteau's attempt was the only shot to find its spot on the scoreboard.
Campbellsville will hit the road heading to Lebanon, Tennessee on Tuesday, September 20
thfor a Mid-South Conference match-up. The Lady Tigers will compete against the #15 Cumberland University beginning at 2pm ET.
