CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — Campbellsville swept KSU in their first home match of the season with a season-high hitting percentage.
Tigers opened up their first set at home with an exciting kill from
Jakob Zum Kolk to begin the momentum for the Tigers. At the beginning of the set, the two teams went back and forth until Campbellsville pulled ahead taking advantage of Kentucky State's errors. Campbellsville was up 13-6 and had a .615 hitting percentage and eight digs as a team. Campbellsville progressed continuing to utilize effective offensive and defensive play.
Diego Betancourt was moving the ball around to all of his hitters racking up nine assists. Tigers won the first set 25-15.
Set two started off with a quick kill from
Jariel Diaz. The Tigers were looking to keep building on the successes they had in the opening frame and the kill from Diaz started them on the right foot.
Andres Laboy went to serve and put another ace on the board for the Tigers, making it 9-4. Laboy continued his run and Zum Kolk got an overpass kill after the aggressive serves. Following that, Zum Kolk got back-to-back kills which increased the score 12-4. A few points after Zum Kolk's points,
Jannick Bachman also put up back-to-back kills. Later in the set Bachman went on a service run for three straight points. The set finished with an ace from Laboy with a final score of 25-15. The Tigers maintained a hitting percentage of .310 during the second frame.
The third set got started with
Leonel Fernandez putting the first ball away with his first registered kill for Campbellsville. Tigers had a slow start in this set due to errors within the communication of the team, but Campbellsville quickly cleaned up their side of the net as Kentucky State continued to make errors. Zum Kolk continued to push the Tigers forward towards victory with a service ace. Following the ace,
JoVeaun Banks got a kill which pushed Kentucky State to call a timeout,14-6. Tigers continued to increase their lead and Trevor Gunner aided to this by going on a three-point service spree to put the Tigers up 18-9. The match finished in an exciting rally and Zum Kolk got the game-winning kill.
Tigers won the match 3-0 and Zum Kolk led the team with 10 kills, Betancourt paced the squad with 32 assists, and Laboy had nine total digs. The team finished with 41 total kills, a hitting percentage of 0.438, 32 digs, and six total blocks.
The Tigers will be back in action Friday, February 10
th and travel to Crestview Hills, Kentucky to play their first Mid-South Conference match of the season against Thomas More University at 7 p.m. ET.
