Tigers drop game one, steal game two against Patriots

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Tigers went back to Williamsburg to face the #15 Patriots in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Tigers split the day with University of the Cumberlands winning the second game of the doubleheader.  
 
Game One: Campbellsville 5, Cumberlands 11 
 
Starting the game, the Tigers went three up, three down and it was time for PJ Ledsma to take the mound for Campbellsville. The Patriots starting the game with some heat as they scored four runs before Campbellsville got their first out. The Patriots left two on base as the Tigers got the last two outs.  
 
Jorge Gonzalez was the first Tiger on base after getting hit by a pitch in the top of the second. Jacob Balsley was the second on base for Campbellsville after he was also hit by a pitch. Those two Tigers were left on base after the third out came and Campbellsville saw no runs. Mason Lee entered to game to pitch for the Tigers in the bottom of the second. UC adds two runs and four hits as they closed out the second inning with a six-run lead.  
 
Starting the third frame, Henry Wright was the first on base for Campbellsville after he was walked. He then advanced to second and Chad McCann was walked. McCann was left of base after Wright was caught stealing third and was the last out. Campbellsville was able to get a stop in the bottom of the third as they saw three up, three down. To start the fourth inning, Jacob White got the first hit for the Tigers and that was a double. He was left on base as the three outs came directly after. Zach Bromstead came to the mound for Campbellsville in the bottom of the fourth. The Patriots totaled three hits and three runs as they wrapped up the fourth inning. 
 
The Tigers got their bats going in the top of the fifth frame as they scored five runs off three hits. The first run came from Grant McQueary after he homered to right field. After that, McCann hit a sacrifice fly to right field, but that brought home Miguel Silfa. Up next, White hit a triple RBI homerun and brought Noah Amenta and Jack Marlin home with him.  
 
The five runs scored in the fifth inning weren't enough for the Tigers to take over to large lead of the Patriots. UC ended up scoring one more run in the bottom of the fifth and won the game 11-5. Campbellsville went 3-7 (.429) on lead off batters compared to the Patriots going 1-6 (.167). Campbellsville had their number of runs and hits doubled by the Patriots which aided in their loss.  
 
Game Two: Campbellsville 8, Cumberlands 7 
 
The second game opened with Campbellsville going three up, three down once again. Ryan McFarland was the starting pitcher for the Tigers as they headed into the bottom of the first. The leadoff batter for Cumberlands singled to left field but that was all the action seen in the first inning. There wasn't much action in the second inning or the top of the third. The Patriots closed out the third inning by scoring the first two runs of the game.  
 
Starting the fourth frame, Alex Castaneda gets the first hit for the Tigers with a single through the left side. He was then thrown out on the next play and the last two outs followed. Luis Lopez took over on the mound for the Tigers as the Patriots left three on base in the bottom of the fourth and keep their 2-0 lead. Leading off in the top of the fifth, Gonzalez singled up the middle. He advanced to second after Kale Seitz singled to third base. Wright followed and was walked which led to bases loaded for the Tigers with no outs on the board. McQeary then hit a single through the right side and brought home Gonzalez. In the same play, Seitz tied up the game by scoring off an error in right field. After the third out, Campbellsville totaled three hits, two runs, and left two on base. The Patriots took their lead back in the bottom of the fifth after scoring two runs.  
 
Amenta led off for the Tigers in the top of the sixth. He singled to center field but was thrown out in a double play that got McCann out as well. Gonzalez was up next and added another run to the Tiger total after he homered to center field. In the bottom of the sixth inning, McCann came in to pitch as Cumberlands scored two more runs to take a three-run lead over Campbellsville. The top of the seventh inning was successful for the Tigers as they tied up the game scoring three runs. Josiah Clark was the first on base after being walked. He was followed by McQueary who singled up the middle. Lucas Banta then hit a home run and brought Clark and McQueary home with him. To wrap up the seventh frame, Aaron Hammer took over pitching for Campbellsville and the Patriots managed to score another run.  
 
In the eighth inning, both teams got one hit but saw no runs. In the top of the final inning, Campbellsville took the lead after scoring two runs. Banta got on base after being hit by a pitch and Silfa pinch ran for him. White then hit the game winning homerun and brought Silfa across home plate with him. The Tigers win the game 8-7.  
 
Campbellsville went 1-2 (.500) with bases loaded compared to the Cumberlands going 0-1. CU also went 5-11 (.455) with runners on base and UC went 3-21 (.143) with runners on in this game. The Tigers went 2-5 (.400) with runners in scoring position and the Patriots were only successful once going 1-11 (.091).  
 
Tiger Baseball will be back in action Tuesday, March 7 as they face the Bearcats of Brescia University. The game will be at HIG Field and first pitch is at 3 p.m. ET.
