Tigers suffer batting woes in losses to Grenadiers

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Tigers hosted the Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers for a midweek doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. Campbellsville lost both contests, struggling at the plate.

GAME ONE: Campbellsville 2, IU Southeast 5

The Grenadiers took advantage of an error to send a runner around in the top half of the first inning. The Tigers mustered a hit in their share but would only send four batters to the plate before the frame was over.

IU Southeast was three up, three down in the second, and a Noah Amenta single was remarkable for Campbellsville. The Grenadiers put up a monster third inning with four runs and five hits. Zack Bromstead entered to relieve starter Joseph Ranford and give the Tigers a chance to answer. Although Lucas Banta gave the team their third hit with his single, nothing would come of it.

It was a quick three outs for IU Southeast in the fourth before the Tigers finally caught their offense moving. Gonzalez, reaching on an error, was pushed to second after an Amenta single. Henry Wright sent both home with a single of his own to make things 5-2 in the Grenadiers' favor. After IU Southeast switched pitchers, Campbellsville would leave two as the frame ended.

The Tigers' fifth inning comprised two hits, and both were left stranded. The sixth was quiet, with only one hit between the two teams. After preventing any hits defensively, Campbellsville could not capitalize on loaded bases, and the game ended 5-2 for IU Southeast.

There were ample opportunities to score, but the Tigers were just 2-11 (.182) with runners on. They sought to turn things around at the plate in game two.

GAME TWO: Campbellsville 2, IU Southeast 4

Campbellsville was the first to attack as Jacob Balsley homered over the left-field wall. Indiana University Southeast quickly gained two outs following the home run. Moments later, the Tigers loaded the bases as Grant McQueary stood in the batter's box. McQueary exchanged a hit-by-pitch for an RBI walk.

The Tigers went three-up and three-down for Campbellsville's subsequent three batting attempts. IU Southeast broke the silence of the fourth inning as they scored two runs to even the score.

The score was even at two runs in the seventh inning of play. The Grenadiers loaded the bases under the pressure of two outs. Mael Zan solidified the final out at first base to give the Tigers another chance on offense. Josiah Clark took a vital walk down the first base line to begin the bottom of the seventh inning. Noah Amenta also took a walk down to first; however, the team left both players stranded on the bases.

The Grenadiers took advantage of the extra inning by composing two runs to take the lead. Campbellsville did not recuperate enough to regain the lead and fell to IU Southeast 4-2.

Campbellsville will stay at home for a conference series against the Tennessee Southern Firehawks beginning Friday, April 14th.
