Tigers drop final two of series to Phoenix

LEBANON, Tenn. — Attempting to continue their successes from the day prior, the Tigers fell short in the final two games of their conference series at Cumberland University Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE: Campbellsville 6, Cumberland 8

The Tigers were trying to keep their bats going over Cumberland after a win in the series opener the night prior. Cumberland opened the second match with a lethal offense as they were up 5-0 by the end of the second inning. The Tigers tried to respond with a home run from Chad McCann to left field that brought in three runners, cutting their deficit to just two.

Campbellsville continued to build toward their comeback in the fourth inning, adding another run to the scoreboard with a homer from Henry Wright. Campbellsville applied pressure to Cumberland later on as they scored twice in the fifth inning from McCann reaching first on a throwing error by third base, Samio Uze advancing to second then third following that error, and Alex Castaneda scoring to knot things at five.

The Tigers kept the climb going with a single from Jorge Gonzalez, which resulted in Uze adding one to the scoreboard. Cumberland responded in the bottom of the fifth and sixth with two more runs finishing the game 8-6 in their favor.

Campbellsville finished the contest with six runs and four hits. The pitchers for the game included Garrett Maloney, Luis Lopez, and Mason Lee (each playing two innings), allowing eight runs and seven hits on the day.

GAME TWO: Campbellsville 1, Cumberland 12

It would be a slow offensive start for the Tigers in the series' final game. Their bats woke up in the third inning with a single from Lorenzo Gonzalez and an RBI to put the Tigers on the board. Cumberland was producing an unstoppable offensive display as they were up 11-1 at the bottom of the fourth inning. The game was called short due to weather in the fifth, but not before the Phoenix scored again to end things at 12-1.

The Tigers had three hits and had an unfortunate 11 errors.

Campbellsville will be back in action on Tuesday, April 11th, at home against Indiana University Southeast at 6 p.m. ET.
