Blocks put Campbellsville over Georgetown

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – On Friday night, our Campbellsville Tigers battled against the Georgetown Tigers. Despite losing the second set, the home Tigers took the battle of the Tigers 3-1 behind their frontline blocking.

The first set began with an attack error from Georgetown, earning Campbellsville their first point on the scoreboard. The opposing Tigers quickly retaliated with a kill that tied the score at one, but the home Tigers did not falter at the opposition. Back-to-back service aces by Cierra Merrick propelled Campbellsville's score forward, preventing Georgetown from getting the score any closer. As the first frame continued to unfold, the Tigers kept the rival Tigers no less than a seven-point cushion on the scoreboard. Brooke Hager kept control at the net, blocking Georgetown's attempts and landing kills of her own. Two kills from Molly Shannon, assisted by Camryn Rich, closed things out with a set win for Campbellsville, 25-18.

Much like the first set, the second frame of play started with a service error from the opposing Tigers, giving the home Tigers a head start on the lead. After tying at three, kills from Hager and Hannah McGill aided Campbellsville in regaining the lead. Morgan Furness' fierce defense held the Tigers' advantage as she blocked an attack from Georgetown. Throughout the development of the frame, the Tigers continued to leave Georgetown on the trailing end of the score until the teams knotted at 12. Even though the rival Tigers made another kill that brought them up by one, Campbellsville quickly struck back with a kill from Molly Shannon, assisted by Taylor Thacker. After strong offensive plays from both teams, the battle of the Tigers came to a tie at 23. Despite the home Tigers' efforts, the opposing Tigers took the second set, 25-23.

A service ace from Rich set the third frame into motion. Georgetown took the lead, but Hager swiftly landed a kill for Campbellsville, assisted by Rich and followed by blocking an attack from the rival Tigers. The Tigers regained control over the score at 18-17 with a kill from McGill assisted by Rich, their first lead since the initial moments of the set. Three back-to-back kills by Hager pushed Campbellsville's score upward. The home defense allowed the rival Tigers only one more point after an attack error from Campbellsville. Hager closed the third set with a win for the Tigers, 25-18.

The fourth set began with a service error from Georgetown, earning Campbellsville their first point of the frame. With three kills from Hager, assisted by Rich, the Tigers held a seven-point advantage over the rival Tigers. Campbellsville's score widened after Gerogetown's back-to-back attack and ball-handling errors. Thacker and Rich kept racking assists with their agile passes to their fellow teammates. A kill from Cierra Merrick, assisted by Rich, closed the fourth frame with another win for the Tigers, 25-19.

Campbellsville finished the match with a hitting percentage of .290, seven aces, and ten blocks, compared to Georgetown's .139 hitting percentage, nine aces, and three blocks.
