Lady Tigers earn top-ten finish at NWCA National Duals

Cedar Falls, Ia. – The Lady Tigers competed in the NWCA/USMC Mutli-Division National Dual Championships weekend and came away with a ninth-place finish. En route to their top-ten finish, Campbellsville took out Missouri Valley College twice, and Indiana Tech.

The Lady Tigers emerged victorious against Missouri Valley College in the first dual. At 101 lbs., Riley Banyas started strong with an 11-0 technical fall. Icart Gulumette earned a first-period pin at 116 lbs. to extend the Lady Tigers' lead. At 123 lbs., Josie Davis received a forfeit before Olivia Messerly earned a technical fall over her opponent at 130 lbs. Gaby Perez, competing at 136 lbs., picked up a second-period pin over Willow Barnes before Emma Walker received a forfeit in the 143 lbs. weight class. Sierra Chaves and Kendra Thompson emerged victorious in the next two matches, 155 lbs. and 170 lbs. Missouri Valley took the 191 lbs. match, but more was needed to change the dual's final score. The Lady Tigers won their first dual, 35-10.  

In the second round, the Lady Tigers took on Menlo College. Gabrielle Medeiros earned the first win for the Lady Tigers with a pin over Angelique Cervantes. The Lady Tigers lost four consecutive matches before Walker earned a technical fall over Desiree Jones. In the remainder of their matches, the Lady Tigers came up short. The final team score ended in favor of Menlo, 32-12.

The Lady Tigers took on Missouri Baptist University in the third round. Davis was the first to win for the Lady Tigers, earning a second-period pin in the 123 lbs. match. At 136 lbs., Gabriella Perez picked up a fall over Chloe Herrick. Walker earned a technical fall over Tiyahna Askew at 143 lbs. The Lady Tigers fell short of a victory, falling to Missouri Baptist University, 30-16.

On day two, the Lady Tigers ran into Missouri Valley once again. At 101 lbs., Banyas picked up a pin over Sage Beltran, who she had beaten by technical fall earlier in the tournament. Galumette earned an uncontested technical fall over Mystyque Anderson in the 116 lbs. weight class. Once again, at 123 lbs., Davies received a forfeit, and at 136 lbs., Perez earned an uncontested technical fall. At 143 lbs., Walker received a forfeit. Thompson earned an uncontested technical fall over Jericka Renner at 155 lbs. At 170 lbs., Sierra Chavez earned an 8-0 victory over Elizabeth Hubbard. At 191lbs, Lexiana Garcia pinned her opponent in the first period, cementing the 35-10 final score.

The Lady Tiger took on Indiana Tech in their final dual of the tournament, winning 34-12. Campbellsville lost the first two matches of the dual by technical fall before Gulamette earned a pin over Emma Jones to put them on the scoreboard. At 123 lbs., Davis extended the Lady Tigers' lead by picking up a pin over Andrea Hernandez. Olivia Messerly, at 130 lbs., and Gabriella Perez, 136 lbs., picked up technical falls, helping push the Lady Tigers further ahead. At 143 lbs., Walker earned a quick first-period pin over Maia Crumb, and at 155 lbs. Thompson pinned Cydney Bassett. Garcia finished off the weekend for the Lady Tigers, earning a forfeit.
