Tigers fall in 3-1 defeat against Cumberlands; Krstic garners 1,000th assist

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Campbellsville Tigers traveled to Williamsburg, Kentucky, to match up against the University of the Cumberlands Patriots on Tuesday night. Cumberlands' offensive pressure was too much for the Tigers, allowing the Patriots to steal the second match-up of the two teams, 3-1.

Kicking off the first set, Emily Aabye grabbed the game's first point. Though the Tigers struck hard and first, the Patriots did not fall too far behind, allowing the set to remain even following the first handful of plays. In a back-and-forth game, neither team was to be dissuaded. However, Erica Rosario Calderon's kill put the Tigers over the Patriots mid-way through the set, and they never looked back. A kill from Brooke Hager awarded the Tigers set one, 25-18.

Cumberlands opened the second set on a run before the Tigers got a shot to respond. The Tigers clawed their way through the minimal deficit to level with the Cumberlands. Though the Tigers put up a fight, the Patriots' final push put them over Campbellsville. Cumberlands took the second set, 25-21.

The Patriots opened the third set with a kill, but Campbellsville quickly responded with a block from Jana Krstic. For most of the set, few points were allowed each way. Cumberlands found themselves on a run again, but consecutive kills from Molly Shannon, Aabye, and Hager put them back in the game. However, the Patriots found their flow, resulting in the Tigers dropping the third set, 25-18.

The Patriots began the fourth set with a kill, but the next serve put the Tigers on the board. Campbellsville was in for a fight, as each team only allowed one point each way. Cierra Merrick pulled the Tigers to the lead, but Cumberlands had the hot hand and took the fourth and final set, 25-15.

Campbellsville will be back in action this Thursday, October 10th, hosting the Georgetown Tigers in Gosser Gymnasium. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET.

  • Merrick led the Tigers in the kill category with 12, Krstic ended the night with 40 assists, and Shannon had a game-high 18 digs.
  • With her 40-assist performance in tonight's match, Krstic surpassed 1,000 kills for the 2024 season.
  • The Tigers' most recent defeat against the Patriots occurred in 2021, ending in a 3-1 victory for the Cumberlands. Campbellsville's four-game win streak against the Patriots came to an end tonight.
