CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University Baseball hosted the Brescia University Bearcats on Tuesday afternoon in their first home game of the 2024 season. A huge offensive performance in the fourth by the Tigers helped them cruise past the Bearcats, 13-1.
Ian Roemer stood on the hill for the Tigers to begin the day. Roemer collected his first two strikeouts of the contest within the first three batters. However, in the top of the second inning, the Bearcats gained the upper hand bringing a run across after two hits. Brescia would leave three runners on base though as the Campbellsville defense put the clamps on. The Tigers' offense started slowly as they wouldn't get their own hit until the bottom of the third frame, when
Amayas Lamar singled to right center.
Campbellsville's offensive setbacks would give way to a deluge of scoring in the fourth inning when the Tigers got their bats going, tallying six hits.
Mael Zan set the tone with his solo home run to left-center field. From there, Campbellsville mustered five more hits:
Jorge Gonzalez's single,
Jonah Bachiu's and
Chad McCann's two-RBI singles,
Henry Wright's two-RBI double, and J. Gonzalez's bookend home run over right center, bringing in three more runs for the team. The team was walked a handful of times in the frame too, the Bearcats unable to keep the ball in the umpire's strike zone (the team ended with seven total walks for the contest). Suddenly, the script had flipped for the Tigers as they pounced ahead, 11-1.
In the contest's final moments, the Tigers extended their lead over the Bearcats getting big contributions from
River Terry and his first hit of the early season and as a Tiger, 13-1.
Logan MacNiel (entering after the big, fourth inning),
Cameron Hood, and then
Aaron Hammer all stepped onto the mound. Hammer ended things, getting one inning in with two strikeouts against his three batters.
J. Gonzalez led the team with two hits and three RBIs. He also had two runs himself, matching the team-high with Zan. Roemer saw 16 at-bats, throwing 61 pitches.
Campbellsville will have a doubleheader on Saturday February 24th playing at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. ET against the University of Northwestern Ohio Torque.
