TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Campbellsville Tigers continued their campaign in Talladega, Alabama, to complete their series against the Tornadoes of Talladega College. After finishing the first day 1-1, the Tigers fell to the Tornadoes late in the game, 6-5.
Amayas Lamar began the game with a lead-off single to left field but was caught at second base for the first out of the inning. Jorge Gonzalez followed with a single of his own, sending a pitch to shortstop. Chad McCann and Henry Wright reached base via walk, leaving the base loaded. All three were left on base to move into the bottom half of the inning. Tristin Crusenberry opened on the mound for the Tigers. The Tornadoes put a runner on base on a double to left center but was left stranded when the final out was recorded.
Jonah Bachiu was given free bases on a walk to begin the second inning. Bachiu moved into scoring position after stealing second. Shoki Fukui also reached base on a walk. Lamar singled to center field, scoring Bachiu and advancing Fukui to second. The Tigers took an early 1-0 over the Tornadoes before the conclusion of the top of the second.
Kale Seitz singled to center field in the third inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With the help of Yosuke Fujie, Seitz was moved to third base. Unfortunately, Seitz was left stranded on base. Talladega put runners on base in the bottom half but couldn't capitalize.
During the fourth inning of work, Fukui singled to left center. Lamar followed with a single to right center, moving Fukui to second. J. Gonzalez reached base via walk to load the bases. McCann was hit by a pitch, advancing all the runners and scoring Fukui. Seitz reached on a fielder's choice, moving J. Gonzalez and McCann into scoring position at second and third. The Tigers' success continued with Wright sending a pitch to right center, doubling, and scoring J. Gonzalez and McCann. When the final out was recorded, the Tigers extended their lead to 4-0 over the Tornadoes. Talladega reached base on a fielding error, followed by a walk and a single to left field to send on run across the plate. A wild pitch allowed another Tornado batter to reach base, advance another into scoring position at second, and add another run to their side of the scoreboard. The Tornadoes cut into the Tigers' lead to move into the fifth inning, 4-2.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Bachiu and Fukui were awarded free bases on walks but left on base. In the bottom half, Ryan McFarland took over on the mound for Crusenberry. Campbellsville and McFarland quickly retired the inning in three up, three down fashion.
McCann started the sixth inning with a single to left field, later stealing second. With the help of Seitz, McCann advanced to third. A wild pitch sent McCann across the plate, extending the Tigers' lead to 5-2. The Tornadoes attempted to answer but couldn't send anyone across the plate.
The Tigers were put away quickly to move to the bottom of the seventh. The Tornadoes added another run to their side of the scoreboard after sending a pitch over the fence, 5-3. With two hits and a runner on base after being walked, the Tornadoes sent another run across the plate. Mason Lee came in to relieve McFarland. A double to right center sent TWO runs across the plate and left the scoreboard reading 6-5 in favor of Talladega.
The Tigers were put away in three up, three down style in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half, Aaron Hammer came to the mound for Campbellsville. The Tigers quickly retired the bottom half to move to the ninth inning.
Seitz reached via walk to begin the ninth inning. Reid Sturn came in to pinch run for Seitz. Wright was hit by a pitch to reach base and moved Sturn into scoring position at second. A wild pitch moved both Wright and Sturn to scoring position. A pitching change for the Tornadoes and an intentional walk on Fujie loaded the bases with one out. Trent Buchanan reached on a fielder's choice with the out at home, moving Wright to third and Fujie to second. The final out of the ball game was recorded before the Tigers could send any more runs across the plate, falling to the Tornadoes 6-5.
Lamar led the Tigers with three hits. Campbellsville only led with three stolen bases to Talladega's zero. The Tornadoes led with .865 OPS to the Tigers' .705, RBI (5-4), doubles (2-1), homeruns (1-0), and earned runs (5-4).
The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday, March 13th, to take on Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Indiana. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m. ET.
