GEORGETOWN, Ky. — The (RV) Campbellsville Tigers had the chance to make it 2-0 on the season against the #10 Georgetown College Tigers, thus securing their Mid-South Conference Championship Tournament first-seed. However, the rival Tigers had other plans, exacting their revenge against Campbellsville with a sweep.
Campbellsville came out strong, trading points with the Tigers of Georgetown early in the set. John Marcos Gonzalez paced the Campbellsville offense with a trio of kills. However, Georgetown began to pull away midway through the set. A service ace by the opposing Tigers sparked a run for Georgetown, forcing a Campbellsville timeout at 19-18. Our Tigers battled back, with a kill from Gonzalez pulling them within two points, but Georgetown held on down the stretch, closing out the set on a kill. The Campbellsville squad displayed resilience and determination throughout the night, but the Tigers fell 25-21 in set one.
The second set unfolded in a nail-biting fashion, with neither team able to establish a significant lead. Aleksa Plevaljcic emerged as a force for the Tigers early, hammering down several powerful kills to keep Campbellsville in the thick of it. The score remained tied well into the set, with both squads showcasing impressive defensive plays and strategic serves. A pivotal moment arrived at 18-18 when Georgetown ignited a run, forcing a Campbellsville timeout. Our Tigers refused to go down without a fight and a kill from Gaston Barrionuevo pulled Campbellsville back within a point. However, Georgetown remained composed, closing out the set with a kill, falling 25-23.
The third set started with a sense of urgency on both sides. However, Georgetown quickly established control, fueled by a service run forcing a Campbellsville timeout at a staggering 9-15 deficit. Our Tigers struggled to find their rhythm offensively. Georgetown blocks repeatedly stifled several Campbellsville attacks at the net. Joao Tavares provided a spark with a powerful kill, Unfortunately, these plays were overshadowed by Georgetown's offensive onslaught. The set progressed in a one-sided manner, with Georgetown maintaining a comfortable lead. Campbellsville managed to score points sporadically, but they were simply unable to match Georgetown's offensive efficiency. The final point came on a bad set by the Tigers to give Georgetown the 25-16 win over Campbelllsville.
The Campbellsville Tigers will look to learn from this close battle and bounce back in the final regular-season home game of the 2024 season (and senior night): Friday April 12th at 5 p.m. ET.
