Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Ashlyn Sandidge & Shelbie Beatty

Campbellsville wins and falls in four sets to split first day of competition

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Campbellsville Tigers traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana, for the ONSET Invitational to face the University of Northwestern Ohio and Grace College. After a first-match win, the Tigers fell in the second of the day, ending with a split for the first day of competition.

GAME ONE: Campbellsville 3, Northwestern Ohio 1

Opening the set, the Tigers grabbed the first point with a block from Zofia Serafinowska and Molly Shannon. With neither team allowing more than a few points between each other, the first set remained even. Emily Aabye's kill, assisted by Jana Krstic, awarded Campbellsville the first set, 25-17.

Despite the Tigers' great first set, the Racers jumped to a quick lead to start the second. The Tigers attempted to regain control, but the Racers took the set 25-21.

The Racers opened the third set with a kill; however, the Tigers quickly responded and did not look back. Undeterred, Cierra Merrick racked up multiple kills to give the Tigers a major advantage. After a great team effort, Campbellsville took the third set, 25-15.

Maintaining their aggressive style of play, Campbellsville opened the fourth set with a kill from Aabye. Though the Tigers struck first, Northwestern put up a fight, sharing points through most of the set. The Tigers went on a 5-1 run to collect the fourth and final set, 25-22.

GAME TWO: Campbellsville 1, Grace 3

The Tigers and the Lancers started the first set, remaining close to the other. Campbellsville went on a 4-0 run to take the most significant lead of the set. The Tigers held their four-point lead until Grace took a six-point run of their own. Campbellsville attempted to work their way back into the set but couldn't get the job done before the final point was recorded. The Lancers took set one, 25-23.

Much like the first set, the second took a back-and-forth pattern. The Lancers capitalized on Tiger errors to go on a 7-0 to take over on the scoreboard. Campbellsville tried to play catch-up but couldn't make up the ground, falling 25-17.

Kills by Serafinowska and Aabye, combined with four service aces from Krstic, led the Tigers to an 8-0 lead to begin the third set. Campbellsville continued their lead with the Lancers attempting to work their way back. The third set ended in favor of the Tigers, 25-22.

Similar to the rest of the match, both teams kept the other from gaining too much of an advantage in the fourth set. Three kills from Merrick helped the Tigers take a slight lead over Grace. Unfortunately, the Tigers fell after sending the set into extra points, 26-24.

Campbellsville will be back on the court on Saturday, August 24th, to take on Mount Vernon Nazarene University and Indiana University at South Bend. The matches are set to begin at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. ET.

  • In the first game, Campbellsville bested Northwestern in all categories but total attacks. The Tigers had an outstanding 7-2 in service aces.
  • Aabye led the Tigers in kills with 18, followed by 45 assists from Jana Krstic, and 25 digs from Marisa Gallardo.
  • In the second game, the Tigers were led by Aabye with 14 kills, Merrick with 13 kills, and Serafinowska with 11 kills.
