Tigers leave the Big Easy with consecutive victories

NEW ORLEANS, La. —The Tigers took on another pair on the final day of the Big Easy Blastoff tournament as they faced off against Columbia College (Mo). and Xavier University of Louisiana. Campbellsville completed day two of NOLA with a sweep, winning five out of the seven total sets.

GAME ONE: Campbellsville 3, Columbia 2

Kicking things off, Erica Calderon and Elizabeth Erwin shut down the Cougars with a block. With both teams' defensive efforts being above par, points were shared both ways throughout the set. After an evenly-balanced set, errors bested Campbellsville allowing Columbia to take the first set, 25-20.

Much like the first, the Tigers struck first and hard stemming from a kill by Calderon assisted by Jana Krstic. Though the Cougars jumped to a lead, the Tigers clawed back with efforts from Emily Aabye and Cierra Merrick. The set ended just as it began with a kill from Erwin securing the second set for the Tigers, 25-20.

The Tigers continued their aggressive approach and opened the third set with a quick 3-1 run. Despite a run from Columbia, the Tigers capitalized on the Cougars errors, pushing them to a lead. Once again, Erwin finished off the Cougars with a kill and took the third set, 25-18.

To begin the fourth set, Columbia struck first, but Campbellsville quickly retaliated. In a back and forth set, efforts from Molly Shannon and Krstic tried to rally Campbellsville to grab the fourth. However, the Cougars ended on a 9-3 run and ultimately stole the set, 25-19.

Both teams were in for a fight with neither team allowing more than one point scored each way. Calderon and Erwin ended an exclamation of a game with their own exclamation of a block, claiming the fifth and final set, 18-16.

GAME TWO: Campbellsville 3 , Xavier (La.) 0

Both the Tigers and the Gold Nuggets got off to a quick hot start with runs of their own to open the first set. The Nuggets jumped to a four-point lead, but the Tigers did not back down. Kills from Emily Aabye and Molly Shannon gave Campbellsville a six-point run of their own. Krstic finished off the set with a service ace grabbing the first set, 25-20.

Though the Nuggets struck first in the second set, the Tigers were golden and pounced for seven straight. Xavier tried to deter Campbellsville with a late run, but the Tigers could not be stopped. A kill from Calderon, assisted by Krstic shut down the Nuggets and the Tigers claimed the second set, 25-20.

Much like the sets before, the Tigers' run spurt continued and they quickly jumped to a 4-1 lead. Errors from the Nuggets and kills from the Tigers bested Xavier's hope in fighting back. In the end, the Tigers were too much for the Golden Nuggets resulting in Campbellsville completing the third and final set, 25-14.

Campbellsville University will be back on the court, Wednesday, September 4th, for their home opener against Brescia University. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
