BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Campbellsville Women's Wrestling team traveled to Bristol, Tennessee, to take part in the Tornado Open on Saturday. Three Tigers ended victorious in their respective brackets, with two others earning top-three finishes.
Emma Walker, Liliana Vergara, and Brianna Staebler wrestled their way to the top of their weight-class, taking first place at the Tornado Open.
Walker, wrestling at 145 lbs., received a first-round bye before winning the following four matches. Walker's wins came by a technical fall over Emmanuel University's Kendra Heroch (10-0), by fall over University of Rio Grande's Kara Bebout (1:47), by fall over Emmanuel University's Aalijah Pineda (1:24), and by fall over Emmanuel University's Gianna Dibenedetto (1:23).
Vergara, wrestling at 180 lbs., won by fall over Snow's Audrey Gribble (0:33), by fall over unattached Nile Jernigan (4:26), by technical fall over Frostburg State's Jada Arnold (13-3), and by technical fall over Huntingdon's Aniyah Griffin (12-2).
Staebler, wrestling at 207 lbs., won by fall over West Liberty's Jamie Shapton (2:16), by fall over Emory & Henry's Emma Lozada (1:14), by injury default over University of the Cumberlands' Maquoia, and by three caution rule over Emmanuel University's Gemma Templeman.
Addison Messerly, wrestling in the 138-lbs. bracket, earned a second-place finish. After a first-round bye, A.Messerly by decision over Lindsey Wilson's Ta'Jai Broadnex (3-0), by fall over Huntingdon's Caden Collett (1:48), and by fall over Emmanuel University's Sofia Vergara (2:32) before losing in the first-place match.
Gabriella Perez, also wrestling at 138 lbs., earned a third-place finish. After receiving a first-round bye, Perez worked her way back after a second-round loss. Perez won by fall over University of Rio Grande's Annalis Ortez (1:50), by technical fall over Schreiner University's Brooke Wieczorek (10-0), by technical fall over Campbellsville's Angelina Temprano (10-0), by fall over Frostburg State's Trinity Butler (2:31), by decision over Emmanuel University's Sofia Vergara (9-2), and by fall over Huntingdon's Tristin Robinson (1:33).
Other Tiger wrestlers won many matches. Cameron Ortiz won by fall twice (1:01 and 0:44) and by decision (9-8) in the 131-lbs. bracket. Sierra Chavez earned a bye, won by fall (5:06), by decision (9-2), and by technical fall (10-0) in the 160-lbs. bracket. Meghan Werbrich won by fall (2:25) and technical fall twice (10-0 and 10-0) in the 160-lbs. bracket. Kylee Tait received a bye and earned two wins by fall (3:31 and (1:42) in the 160-lbs. bracket.
Campbellsville had several wrestlers finish the weekend with one win, respectively: Gabrielle Medeiros by decision (8-3), Emily Anderson by technical fall (10-0), Josie Davis by fall (3:37), Angelina Temprano by fall (1:40), Rita Carey by decision (8-0), and Judea Higgins-Morris by decision (4-2).
The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, January 24th, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to wrestle at the Indiana Tech Multi Duals. The duals are set to being at 1 p.m. ET.
