Tigers pick up first win of the season at the Centre Indoor Showcase

DANVILLE, KY - The Tigers come away with their first meet win of the 2024-25 season at the Centre Indoor Showcase on Saturday.

Early in the meet, Campbellsville picked up 17 points in the 60m finals. Jason Baskerville earned the bronze medal position with his time of 6.93, JaQuez Campbell was directly behind Baskerville by .01 in 6.94, Devin Girtman placed 5th in the event in 6.97, and Kamarion Ward was 7th overall in 7.07. 19 more points were added to the Tigers total in the 5,000m run. Jean-Benoit Merte led the charge in 3rd in 15:54.40, Aaron Smith was 4.99 seconds behind in 15:59.39 placing 4th, Brayden Kaelin earned 5th in 16:11.67, Sam Bennett placed 6th at 16:20.64, and Samuel Larson rounded out scoring in 16:45.56. 

Ethan Johnson was the runner-up in the mile on the afternoon. He still earned ten points in the event due to the winning athlete was unattached. Johnson was able to run the mile in 4:36.37. Zachary Phelps, Ward, and Matthias Brice gave Campbellsville 15 more points in the 300m. Phelps led the way in 3rd at 35.63, Ward was 4th in 36.13, and Brice placed 5th overall in 36.99. 

Johnson earned the Tigers three points in the 800m, placing 6th in 2:08.54. Phelps and Campbell were the final point scorers on the track. Campbell was the bronze medalist in the 200m in 22.49, and Phelps was 4th overall in 22.55. 

In the field, CamRon Hamby placed 2nd in the long jump with his best mark of 6.65m on his third attempt of the afternoon. Raylon Wilson was only .24m behind Hamby in 4th place at 6.41m. Wilson won the high jump title on his first attempt of 1.95m. Corey Smith II and David Young both placed back-to-back in the triple jump. Smith led the way as the runner-up with a mark of 13.90m, and Young was 3rd at 13.63m. 

Seth Cartwright was the lone scorer for Campbellsville in the shot put. Cartwright gave the Tigers three points, placing 6th at 13.94m. Schavon Carr participated in the PNC Bellarmine Classic Friday evening. Carr won his second event of the season in the 60m hurdles in 8.08, only .07 off, tying his school record from last weekend. 

Overall, Campbellsville won the meet with 115 team points, beating out host Centre College by 11 points with 104 total.

Campbellsville will now look ahead toward the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational on Friday, January 31st, in Louisville, KY.
