CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – In their third match in two consectuive days at home, the #14 Tigers succumbed to a potent, relentless attack by the #13 Cornerstone Golden Eagles, losing in straight sets. The Tigers tried to overcome multiple errors, but the Golden Eagles proved to be too much of an offensive threat.
In the first set, the Tigers came out hot with an overpass kill by
Mason McKinney. Cornerstone quickly put offensive pressure on the Tigers, but Campbellsville responded with kills of their own. The game was error driven on both sides while both squads were trying to find their groove. The Tigers refused to quit when a stuff block from
Alonzo Vega fired up the bench and the players on the court. An amazing defensive kick to get the ball alive from
Andrew Ovalle helped the Tigers stay within one point. The offense of the Golden Eagles proved to be too quick for the Tigers as Cornerstone won the first set 25-21.
Campbellsville started the second set on the board first, but Cornerstone quickly followed.
Denzel Madrigal found a hole in the Golden Eagles defense three consecutive time to tie it up at 6's. However, Cornerstone snuck back in and created an even playing field at 8's. Campbellsville is forced to call a timeout at 12-9 to try to stop the four-point run by Cornerstone. The Tigers cut the deficit to just one, but the Golden Eagles finished the set, 25-22.
Cornerstone was the lead contributor in the beginning of the third set, scoring six straight points to open the game. The Tigers quickly rebounded trying to keep the set under control. With the Golden Eagles expanding the lead, the Tigers called a timeout at 14-6 to try to reconnect on the game plan. A kill from
Pedro Zavatini brought the Tigers within ten, but that was the closet the Tigers reached the rest of the way. Cornerstone took the third and final set, 25-15.
The Tigers are back in action Tuesday, February 18
th, traveling to Indiana to take on the Oakland City University Mighty Oaks. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
