BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Campbellsville University Lady Tigers wrestling team battled their way to a fourth-place finish out of 12 teams at the Mid-South Conference Championship Tournament in Bowling Green, Ky. on Friday. Several Lady Tigers grapplers finished with high placement, highlighted by both Icart Galumette's and Liliana Vergara's impressive runner-up performances.
#12 Galumette dominated her first three matches before ultimately falling to #4 Salyna Shotwell of Life University in the championship bout. Other notable performances for the Lady Tigers included Olivia Messerly, who secured fourth place at 131 pounds, and Cameron Ortiz, who climbed the podium to claim third at the same weight.
In the 138-pound weight class, Addison Messerly and Gaby Perez finished fourth and third, respectively, with Perez besting Messerly in the finals via decision. Leilani Martinez wrestled her way to a fifth-place finish in the 145-pound bracket. The 160-pound weight class saw Sierra Chavez and Kylee Tait finish third and fourth, respectively, again with two Lady Tigers battling for the finish where Chavez came away victorious.
#7 Liliana Vergara added to the team's success with a second-place finish in the 180-pound weight class, losing in a tough 9-7 decision to #3 India Page of the Blue Raiders. Brianna Staebler rounded out the Lady Tigers' placers with a sixth-place finish in the 207-pound weight class.
Campbellsville had the most amount of pins in the tournament with 13.
The Life University Running Eagles captured their third straight MSC Championship Tournament while Cumberlands finished second and Lindsey Wilson third, just four points more than Campbellsville.
The Lady Tigers will now set their sights on the NAIA National Championships, which will be held in Jamestown, N.D. on March 14-15.
