Tigers complete Cumberland Classic run; add two more sweeps to season total

LEBANON, Tenn. – Campbellsville University finished their run at the Cumberland Classic in dominant fashion, securing two sweeps on the day with victories over Judson University and Life University.

GAME ONE: Campbellsville 3, Judson 0

The Tigers came out strong in their first match against Judson, opening with a four-point scoring run. Ayoube Hamadache energized the team with a powerful back-row attack, setting the tone for an aggressive offensive display. Early kills from John Marcos Gonzalez helped Campbellsville maintain momentum, forcing Judson to call a timeout at 13-9. Mason McKinney followed with back-to-back stuff blocks to extend the lead, but the Eagles clawed back within two with a block of their own. Denzel Madrigal made a major impact, recording four kills in the first set alone and prompting another Judson timeout at 19-15. The Tigers maintained control, closing out the set 25-21.

The Tigers carried their momentum into the second set with aggressive serving, and Hamadache continued his offensive dominance with a smart line shot. A kill by McKinney extended Campbellsville's lead to four, but Judson stayed in the fight, closing the gap to two. After the Eagles capitalized on an overpass to even the score, Campbellsville responded with a crucial block to go up by two. A Judson timeout at 22-18 did little to slow the Tigers, who closed out the set with another 25-21 victory.

Judson struck first in the third set, but Campbellsville quickly responded, tying the score at 3. David Barcan used the block to his advantage, putting the Tigers up by three and forcing an Eagles timeout at 10-6. Madrigal continued to shine, hammering down back-to-back kills, extending the lead to five, and prompting another Judson timeout. Alonzo Vega sealed the deal with consecutive aces, and Campbellsville cruised to a 25-18 win, securing the sweep.

GAME TWO: Campbellsville 3, Life 0

In their second match of the day against Life University, the Tigers once again came out swinging, grabbing an early four-point lead before Life battled back to cut the deficit to one. Madrigal capitalized on an overpass to notch an early kill, keeping the Tigers in rhythm. The set remained tight, with ties at 12 and 17, but Pedro Zavatini broke the deadlock with a critical kill to push Campbellsville ahead. Life called a timeout at 20-18 in an effort to halt the Tigers' momentum, and the set remained close, tied at 21. After a Campbellsville timeout, the Tigers surged ahead and closed out the set with a crucial block, winning 25-23.

Life came out strong in the second set, securing the first point and later building a four-point lead. However, Campbellsville quickly regained control, tying the score at 8. Life responded with a three-point run, but the Tigers countered with four straight points of their own to go up by one. The battle continued, with another tie at 16, before Campbellsville extended their lead to three, forcing a Life timeout. The Tigers kept their foot on the gas, causing Life to burn another timeout at 22-16. Campbellsville remained dominant, closing out the set 25-20.

Looking to complete the sweep, the Tigers came out firing in the third set, scoring three straight points and benefiting from a McKinney block to take an early four-point lead. Guthrie Hite made a statement with a powerful free ball attack that landed at the 10-foot line. As the set progressed, Campbellsville's offense became relentless, prompting a Life timeout with the Tigers up by four. The Tigers' aggressive swings continued to pay off as they extended their lead to seven late in the match. Campbellsville sealed the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the final set.

The Tigers will return to action on Monday, March 17, at 6 p.m. ET, facing conference rival Georgetown College at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
