Two homers, big innings lead Tigers over Bears in 6-3 victory

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Coming off their first conference sweep of the season, the Campbellsville Tigers played a mid-week game against the Pikeville Bears on Tuesday. The Tigers walked away victorious, winning the rematch, 6-3.

On the mound for the Tigers was Ryan McFarland, making his fourth start and ninth appearance of the season. The righty looked to continue building his momentum after four-shutout innings last week. McFarland set the tone for the Tigers and recorded a perfect first inning.

Yosuke Fujie started the offense with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first inning. Fujie stole second with one out and advanced to third on a groundout, though he was left stranded.

In the top of the second inning, McFarland ran into trouble after a leadoff double. The runner advanced to third on a passed ball, and then the next hitter reached after a miscommunication on a fly ball to the infield. With runners at the corners, McFarland induced a 4-6-3 double play, though the run was able to score.

The Tigers' offense went quietly in the second and third innings, which meant McFarland would have to be on his A-game to give the team a shot. Through the third and fourth innings, McFarland was able to shut down the Bears' offense while picking up a strikeout.

Unable to get anything going, the Tigers looked to punch back hard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Zane Skansi and Antony Gilbert got the party started with back-to-back singles. Bret Bowers followed up with a routine fly ball to the right fielder, who dropped the ball and loaded the bases. Tanner Park got the Tigers on the board with a sac-fly to left field that plated Skansi. James Teets replaced Bowers at first base with a fielder's choice that moved Gilbert to third and was pinch-run for by Trey Proctor. The speedster immediately stole second, and then Jaxson Grubbs walked to reload the bases. Henry Wright made the error hurt with a two-out base-clearing triple to deep right field, giving the Tigers a three-run lead.

After the Tigers took the lead, McFarland returned to the mound in the top of the fifth inning. A leadoff single and an error to third base put runners at the corners for McFarland, and then a fielder's choice allowed the Bears to plate another run. McFarland bared down and struck out the next two batters to help maintain the lead.

In need of insurance runs, Gilbert was the man for the job in the bottom of the fifth inning. The shortstop left no doubt and blasted a two-out solo homer to left-center field that landed across the street for his third of the season.

Taking over for McFarland in the top of the sixth inning was Chase Tucker, making his eleventh appearance of the season. After a quick first out, a single and a walk brought the tying run to the plate for the Bears. The righty found his groove and escaped the jam with a pop-fly to second base and a strikeout.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Wright stepped up looking for another long ball. Wright launched a towering solo homerun to dead center field for his sixth of the season, extending the Tigers' lead to four runs.

Tucker continued on the mound for the Tigers in the top of the seventh inning, in need of a big shut-down inning. Though the Bears threatened with a one-out single, Tucker maintained his rhythm and hung the zero.

The Tigers threatened to extend the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Skansi found his way on after getting plunked with one out and then stole second with two outs. Bowers followed up with a walk and was pinch-run for by Shoki Fukui. Skansi and Fukui advanced to third and second with a perfectly executed double-steal, though both runners were left stranded.

Ethan Wood took the mound for the Tigers in the top of the eighth inning, making his seventh appearance of the season. The righty struggled to find his rhythm and walked the leadoff man. Wood picked up the first out with a flyout to right field, and then an errant pickoff attempt allowed the runner to advance to third base. Another walk put runners at the corners, and then a sac-fly to left field allowed the Bears to plate another run. With two outs, a single to left field brought the tying run to the plate, but Wood was able to escape with a pop-fly to first base.

Lorenzo Gonzalez kicked off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single up the middle and was pinch-run for by Proctor, who quickly stole second. With one out, Proctor stole third for his sixteenth stolen bag of the season, though he was left stranded.

Wood continued on the mound in the top of the ninth inning, looking to secure the win and pick up the save. The righty quickly retired the first two men he faced while picking up a strikeout, but a single and a walk brought the tying run to the plate again. Wood locked in and punched out the final batter to secure the victory.

The Tigers won the game with six runs on seven hits with three errors, and the Bears lost with three runs on six hits with one error.

The Tigers have a bye week this weekend, but will be back in action on Tuesday, April 1st, with a mid-week game against the Kentucky Christian Knights. The game is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. ET.

  • Today's match-up was their second of the season, with the Tigers taking the first victory 21-9.
  • Woods' save was his first of the season, as well as his first as a Tiger.
