Third sweep in a row captured after 3-0 victory over Rio Grande

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Campbellsville University continued its dominant stretch, sweeping the University of Rio Grande in three sets with an overpowering offensive performance.

The Tigers wasted no time setting the tone, opening the match with a service ace from Alonzo Vega, followed by a powerful swing from Pedro Zavatini. The set was tied briefly at 3-3, but that was the only time Rio Grande kept it even. Campbellsville surged ahead, fueled by multiple digs from Denzel Madrigal and an ace from Zavatini to extend the lead to three. With the offense firing on all cylinders, the Tigers stretched their advantage to six, forcing Rio Grande to call a timeout at 14-6 in an attempt to slow the momentum. Campbellsville continued to apply pressure, landing two more aces and pushing their lead to 15 before closing out the first set with a commanding 25-11 victory.

The second set started similarly, with Zavatini delivering an early kill. Rio Grande responded by tying the score at two and briefly taking a two-point lead behind their star hitter. However, Campbellsville quickly regrouped as John Marcos Gonzalez sparked a run with an ace and a kill, while Mason McKinney followed up with back-to-back kills to regain the lead. The Tigers' offense kept the Red Storm on their heels, with David Barcan adding an ace that forced Rio Grande into another timeout. Zavatini sealed the set with two consecutive kills, securing a 25-15 win and putting Campbellsville up 2-0 in the match.

Looking to complete the sweep, Campbellsville came out hot in the third set, jumping to a 4-0 lead. Rio Grande answered with a four-point run of its own to even the score, but the Tigers capitalized on Red Storm errors to regain a three-point cushion. Vega showcased his playmaking ability, distributing the ball effectively to multiple attackers and keeping the offense unpredictable. Up by six, the match seemed all but decided, but Rio Grande clawed back, cutting the lead to just two. A late timeout by Rio Grande couldn't stop Campbellsville's momentum, as the Tigers held firm to secure the final set 25-21 and complete the sweep.

Campbellsville will return to action on April 1st, traveling to Owensboro, Ky., for a 7 p.m. EST match-up against Brescia University in their second meeting of the season.
