Tigers put up sweep in regular-season finale

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – In their final home match of the regular season, the #14 Campbellsville Tigers delivered a dominant performance on Senior Day, sweeping Cumberland University in straight sets to close out River States Conference play with momentum.

The match opened with a quick 2-0 start for the Tigers, but the Phoenix responded by taking a four-point lead early in the first. Campbellsville fought back with a service ace from Diego Betancourt and a kill from John Marcos Gonzalez to tie the set at 12. A four-point offensive burst, capped by a kill from Denzel Madrigal, helped the Tigers pull ahead. Setter Alonzo Vega kept the Cumberland defense guessing with his balanced ball distribution, and Campbellsville finished the set with a statement, winning 25-21.

Set two saw the Tigers come out firing again, starting with a kill from David Barcan. The middles played a key role, each notching four kills in the set, while Madrigal's service ace helped push the Tigers ahead by six. Campbellsville held an eight-point lead midway through the set, though the Phoenix chipped away to close the gap to three. Still, the Tigers remained composed and reached 20 first, finishing the set with a kill by senior Mason McKinney and an ace from Gonzalez to take it 25-20.

Looking to seal the sweep, Campbellsville jumped ahead early in the third. McKinney, one of the honored seniors, came alive with a kill and two big blocks, igniting the crowd and forcing a Cumberland timeout. Up by eight, the Tigers never looked back. Madrigal took over offensively, scoring seven points in the third set alone. The Tigers surged to the finish line, closing the match 25-14 and completing a memorable Senior Day sweep.

Campbellsville now focuses on the conference tournament, which begins April 15. The location, opponent, and time are still to be determined.
