Tigers complete series against #7 Patriots winless

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – After a hard-fought loss in game one, the Campbellsville Tigers finished the series against the #7 Cumberlands Patriots with a doubleheader. Unfortunately, the Tigers left Williamsburg winless, losing game one 21-5 and game two 7-2.

Game One: Campbellsville 5, Cumberlands 21

Following the Tigers' offensive struggles in the series opener, they aimed to attack early in game one of the doubleheader. Zane Skansi picked up the Tigers' first hit of the day with a laced single to right center field. Tate Wischnack followed up with a two-out single through the left side, moving Skansi into scoring position, though both runners were left stranded.

Brody Forno took the mound for the Tigers, making his eighth start of the season. The righty walked the first batter he faced, and then the Patriots worked a runner in scoring position with a single to left-center field. Forno locked in, retired the next batter, and then tallied a strikeout for the second out. However, the Patriots got on the board with a three-run homer to left-center before the inning finished.

Chasing the lead, the Tigers aimed to tack on a few runs in the top of the second inning. Antony Gilbert found his way on with a one-out single through the six-hole, bringing Henry Wright to the plate. Wright unloaded on a no-doubt blast to left field for his 10th homer of the season, but that was all the Tigers managed in the inning.

Forno continued on the mound in the bottom of the second inning and surrendered a leadoff single. The righty plunked the next batter, and then a double down the left field line plated both runners. The Patriots worked back-to-back walks to load the bases and brought another run home with a single through the four-hole. A single through the left side plated the fourth run of the inning, and then a single to center field brought in two more. With runners at the corners, Forno picked up the first out with a strikeout, and then a groundout to shortstop gave the Patriots their 10th run. A two-run home run to right-center field made it a 10-run ballgame, and the Tigers were forced to go to their bullpen. Ethan Wood took over on the mound, making his 10th appearance of the season. Wood stopped the bleeding with a groundout to third base.

The Tigers' offense couldn't get anything going in the top of the third inning, bringing Wood back to the mound for the bottom of the frame. The Patriots remained on the attack with a leadoff single and then tacked on two more runs with another homerun. Wood picked up the first out with a grounder to himself but walked the next batter. The Patriots gave themselves another runner in scoring position with a single through the right side, and then another single plated their 15th run. Wood plunked the next batter to load the bases and then walked in a run. A single to left center plated two more runs, forcing the Tigers to dig deeper into their bullpen. Jackson Dollar took over for Wood, making his 12th season appearance for the Tigers. With runners at first and second with one out, the Patriots plated their 19th run with a single down the right-field line. Dollar minimized the damage with a couple of pop-flies to end the inning.

James Teets led off the top of the fourth inning with a single to right field, but a double play and a strikeout left the Tigers empty-handed.

Dollar continued on the bump in the bottom of the fourth inning, needing to hang the first scoreless inning of the game for the Tigers' defense. Though the Patriots threatened again, Dollar got the job done and hung the big zero for the Tigers.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Tigers aimed to make some headway to cut into the 17-run lead. Fujie collected his 10th homer of the season with a rocket to left field, but that was the only damage the Tigers made in the frame.

Needing to hang another big zero to give the Tigers a shot, Dollar went back out for the bottom of the fifth inning. After retiring the leadoff man, the submariner plunked the next batter, and Shoki Fukui took over on the mound. Making his fourth appearance of the season, Fukui didn't let the Patriots capitalize and retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Lorenzo Gonzalez led off the top of the sixth inning with a triple to right-center field, helping the Tigers threaten with a runner in scoring position. Tanner Park stepped in the box and walloped a moonshot to left field for his fifth of the season. The Tigers chipped away at the lead but left the inning with just the two runs.

Fukui continued on the mound in the top of the sixth inning, and the Patriots had the 20-spot in mind. After a leadoff single, a two-run homer to center field gave the Patriots their 21st and final run of the game. Fukui bared down and retired the next three batters in order while picking up a strikeout.

The Tigers' offense was retired in order to end the game. The Tigers lost with five runs on eight hits and no errors, while the Patriots won with 21 runs on 16 hits and no errors.

Game Two: Campbellsville 2, Cumberlands 7

The Tigers were retired in order to kick off the series finale, bringing Tristin Crusenberry to the mound to make his ninth start of the season. Crusenberry set the tone with a strikeout to his first batter, but a one-out solo home run to left field put the Patriots on the board. The righty retired the next batter with a groundout, and then the Patriots threatened with a single to center. Crusenberry retired the next batter with a lineout, holding the Patriots to one run.

With one out in the top of the second inning, Tate Wischnack doubled down the right-field line. The Tigers had hopes of tying the game, though they were unable to bring Wischnack home.

In the bottom of the second inning, Crusenberry kept his rhythm and retired the first two batters while adding a strikeout. The Patriots worked a walk with two outs, and then an errant pickoff looked like it would move the runner to third base. However, Bret Bowers, the Tigers' first baseman, retrieved the ball and threw the runner out at third base to end the inning.

Wright led off the top of the third inning with a single to center field, but a double play gave the Patriots a clean slate. Gonzalez picked up his second extra-base hit of the game with a two-out double to left field, though he was left stranded.

Crusenberry continued on the mound in the bottom of the third inning and gave up a leadoff double to center field. A flyout to left field recorded the first out, and then the Tigers intentionally walked the next batter to take a shot at a double play ball. Crusenberry retired the next batter with a groundout to the first baseman and loaded the bases with a walk. The righty escaped the jam with a flyout to right field.

The Tigers' offense was sat down in order in the top of the fourth inning, bringing Crusenberry back out on short rest for the bottom of the frame. The Patriots led off with a single to left-center field, but then Wright threw a dime to second base and hosed the runner trying to stretch a double. After another single and a walk, the Patriots threatened and extended their lead with a three-run home run to left field. Crusenberry regained his rhythm and retired the final two batters of the inning.

With a four-run deficit, the Tigers were running out of time to come back. Park led off with a walk in the top of the fifth inning. Wright followed up with a one-out single through the left side, moving Park into scoring position. However, another key double play aided the Patriots in escaping the inning unscathed.

PJ Ledesma took over for Crusenberry in the bottom of the fifth inning, making his 12th appearance of the season. The Patriots threatened to extend their lead with a leadoff single, and then the runner stole second. Ledesma walked the next batter, and then the Tigers picked up a big double play that moved the runner on second base to third. Ledesma plunked the next batter with two outs, who then stole second base. It was no matter for the lefty, and he struck out the final batter of the inning.

In the top of the sixth inning, Skansi singled to right field and stole second base, though he was left stranded. Ledesma continued on the mound for the Tigers, needing to hang another big zero. The lefty recorded the first perfect inning of the game and retired the side in order.

The Tigers' offense was retired in order in the top of the seventh inning, bringing Ledesma back out for the bottom half. Although he walked the leadoff batter, Ledesma hung another zero with a lineout and another big double play.

Joaquin Hernandez got the Tigers' offense going in the bottom of the eighth inning with a one-out single to right field. Gonzalez gave the Tigers another baserunner with a walk, but the Patriots escaped the jam again with a double play.

Taking over for Ledesma in the bottom of the eighth inning was Joe McBride, making his 12th appearance of the season for the Tigers. After retiring the first batter of the frame with a groundout, the righty surrendered a single to left field. McBride collected the second out with a flyout to center field and then plunked the next batter. The Patriots made it hurt and extended their lead with a three-run homer to left field before the end of the inning.

Down to their final three outs, the Tigers made one final push to try and tie the game in the top of the ninth inning. Skansi picked up his third hit of the day with a single to center field, but the next two batters were retired in order. With two outs, Park stepped up to the plate and demolished his second no-doubt bomb of the day for his sixth of the season. Fujie and Wright followed up with singles to keep the inning alive, though they were both left stranded.

The Tigers lost the game with two runs on 10 hits and one error, and the Patriots won with seven runs on nine hits and no errors.

The Tigers have a couple of days off but will be back in action on Tuesday, April 22nd, for a midweek matchup against the #10 IU Southeast Grenadiers. The game is set begin at 3 p.m. ET.
