Campbellsville completes reverse sweep to fuel 2-0 day

UPLAND, Ind. - On day two of the AMF Memorial Tournament, the tigers went 2-0, winning the first in a five-set thriller over Huntington University and winning in four against the University of Pikeville.

  • Campbellsville volleyball finished the Amber McClure Fayerweather Memorial Tournament with two dramatic victories, flipping their fortunes from day one.
  • The Tigers mounted an incredible comeback against Huntington, winning the third set 27-25 after being down 19-14 and fighting off a match point to spark the 3-2 victory.
  • Brooke Hager was nearly unstoppable against Pikeville, posting 14 kills on a staggering .600 hitting percentage.
  • Mya Leach was a force in the win over Pikeville, recording a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs while firing a match-high five service aces.
  • Kati Vest was a consistent leader for the Tigers, posting double-doubles in both matches with 47 assists and eight digs against Huntington and 45 assists and 12 digs against Pikeville.
  • The Tigers will be back in action September 3rd at 7 p.m. EST at home against Union College.
Match 1: Campbellsville 3, Huntington 2
In one of the most dramatic matches of the season, the Tigers clawed back from a two-set deficit to complete a reverse sweep of Huntington University (11-25, 16-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-12).

After struggling to find their rhythm in the first two frames, the Tigers' comeback began in a pivotal third set. Trailing 19-14, Campbellsville mounted a 5-0 run on Marisa Gallardo'sGallardo's serve to tie the score. The Tigers then fought off a Huntington match point at 24-23 before three late kills from Mya Leach sealed the incredible 27-25 set win.

Carrying that momentum, Campbellsville controlled the fourth set, winning 25-21 to force a decider. In the fifth set, the Tigers jumped out to a 5-11 lead on a serving run by Claire Hammond and held off a late Forester charge to win 15-12 and complete the comeback.

Leach finished with a double-double (12 kills, 14 digs) 9, Riley Thorne added 10 kills and four blocks 10, and Kati Vest dished out 47 assists.

Match 2: Campbellsville 3, Pikeville 1
In the second match, Campbellsville set the tone early, but Pikeville answered with sharp swings to claim the first set 25-19.

In the second, Brooke Hager made her presence felt at the net while the team's aggressive serving kept the Tigers rolling. Errors piled up for the Bears, and Campbellsville secured the set 25-14. The third opened with a quick three-point run for the Tigers. Setter Kati Vest balanced the offense, involving multiple hitters, including four straight kills from Hager during one run that pushed the lead to 14-7. Campbellsville held its ground and closed out the frame 25-18.

Pikeville came out determined in the fourth, jumping to a 4-0 lead, but Mya Leach answered with a serving run that tied the match at 4-4. The Bears fought to a 24-21 lead, but the Tigers stormed back to fend off three set points and tie the score at 24. After trading points, a final kill from Sophie Hill sealed the thrilling 27-25 comeback win and the match.
