GEORGETOWN, Ky. — The #6 Campbellsville University men's volleyball team hit the road to battle the Georgetown College Tigers on Saturday afternoon for their regular-season finale. Highlighted by a highly efficient offense with three attackers reaching double-digit kills, Campbellsville clinched the sweep in straight sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-23) to establish the best regular-season record (26-2) in program history.
- Campbellsville officially clinched the #1 overall seed for the River States Conference (RSC) Tournament and will host the semifinals and finals beginning on Friday, April 17.
- A highly balanced offensive attack saw three Tigers record double-digit kills: Savvas Christou (13), Denzel Madrigal (12), and Ayoub Hamadache (10).
- Junior setter Alonzo Vega masterfully orchestrated the offense with 30 assists, guiding Campbellsville to a blistering .400 team hitting percentage compared to Georgetown's .181.
- Libero Andrew Ovalle anchored the backcourt defense, scooping up a match-high 13 digs to consistently keep the Tigers in system.
Both teams came into the first set with competitive spirits, trading back-and-forth kills to tie the score early at 6-6. Sparked by a five-point scoring run that featured critical kills and three unforced attacking errors by Georgetown, Campbellsville seized the momentum to take a commanding lead. The home Tigers attempted to retaliate, but Campbellsville continued to stretch the gap on the scoreboard. Georgetown's unforced errors quickly proved their downfall, leaving them down by seven points. Comfortably trading side-outs down the stretch, the Tigers took the first set 25-20.
Early in the second frame, Campbellsville built an immediate advantage backed by terminal kills from Madrigal and junior middle blocker
Pedro Zavatini. Georgetown was unable to sustain long rallies, quickly returning free balls to Campbellsville's side of the net. Hamadache's relentless offense from the pin boosted Campbellsville to preserve its comfortable cushion. While Georgetown capitalized on a few unforced Campbellsville errors to score, the heavy swings of freshman
Camilo Fernandez and Christou proved to be uncontrollable, closing the second set with another Campbellsville victory, 25-17.
Facing a sweep, Georgetown came into the third set with avid attempts to extend the match, building a narrow two-point lead. Hamadache answered to tie the score at 10-10, but the home Tigers managed to flip the scoreboard back in their favor midway through the frame. Zavatini's control at the net proved crucial for Campbellsville's push, shutting down Georgetown's attackers to tie the score once again deep into the twenties. Riding their late momentum, Campbellsville secured the straight-set sweep with a match-point kill from Madrigal to finalize the 25-23 set victory.
Following the conclusion of regular-season play on Saturday, the conference office announced the final standings for the River States Conference Men's Volleyball postseason qualifiers. Finishing atop the league with a 14-2 conference record, Campbellsville clinched the #1 overall seed.
