Tigers struggle in opening day of series with Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The Campbellsville Tigers began their final road Mid-South Conference series Friday against Georgetown College, falling 6-0 in game one after a key second inning from Georgetown and coming up short 7-3 in game two despite putting together multiple scoring chances and late-game rallies.

GAME ONE: Georgetown 6, Campbellsville 0
The Tigers went down in order to start the game, while Georgetown put a runner on early with a walk and a stolen base, but was quickly erased on the bases.
Campbellsville put together its best chance in the second, as Tate Wischnack and Jason Franzel recorded back-to-back singles, but both runners were left on base.

Georgetown broke through in the second using a walk, a single, and a passed ball before an RBI groundout and an RBI double made it 2-0. They added another run in the fourth off a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Tigers threatened again in the fifth, with Joaquin Hernandez singling and Nick Hagen drawing a walk, but a double play ended the inning.

Georgetown pulled away in the sixth, scoring three runs on multiple hits and capitalizing on defensive miscues to make it 6-0.

Campbellsville couldn't answer late, as the Tigers were set down in order in the seventh to end it, falling 6-0.

GAME TWO: Georgetown 7, Campbellsville 3
Looking to respond after a tough opening game, the Campbellsville Tigers tried to find an early spark in game two, but Georgetown jumped ahead quickly and controlled the pace from the second inning on.

Brady Henke, Antony Gilbert, and Jaxson Grubbs were set down in order to begin the game, as Georgetown also went quietly and kept the first frame scoreless.

The second inning is where Georgetown broke things open, using a string of hits and baserunners to put up five runs and grab a 5-0 advantage.

Campbellsville went down in order again in the third, while Georgetown matched with a clean inning of their own to maintain the 5-0 lead.

The Tigers finally broke through in the fourth inning when Thomas Krueger doubled and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Kleysen Gabruck, cutting it to 5-1. Georgetown responded right away in the bottom half, taking advantage of a passed ball to push the lead to 6-1.

In the fifth frame, the Campbellsville Tigers showed some life again as Brady Henke and Antony Gilbert reached base, and Krueger and Gabruck helped drive in two runs to make it 6-3. Jaxson Grubbs also kept pressure on the defense as the Tigers tried to build momentum.

The sixth inning saw Anthony Esposito reach on an error, and Gilbert add another hit, but Campbellsville left runners stranded as the inning ended without further damage. Georgetown also went scoreless in the frame.

In the eighth, Jason Franzel singled and Esposito reached after being hit by a pitch, but the Tigers couldn't cash in. Georgetown added an insurance run later in the inning to stretch the lead to 7-3.

The Tigers' final push came in the ninth with a Krueger hit, but Henke and Gabruck were both retired as Georgetown closed the door, taking the win.
