OWENSBORO, Ky. — Campbellsville University scored four second-half goals, including two apiece from
Grace Smith and
Amelie Matheis, to open its 2026 women's soccer season with a 5-0 victory over Brescia University on Saturday.
- Campbellsville controlled the attacking numbers. The Tigers outshot the Bearcats 28-7 and placed 18 attempts on frame, limiting Brescia to one shot on goal.
- The breakthrough led to a second-half surge. Campbellsville carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime before scoring four times after the break, including three goals during the final 10 minutes.
- Smith provided the decisive separation. The Campbellsville forward scored twice in a span of 1 minute, 54 seconds, extending the Tigers' lead from one goal to three midway through the second half.
- The Tigers produced throughout the lineup. Fiona Jolly, Smith, and Matheis accounted for Campbellsville's five goals, while Oddny Helgadottir and Jessie Amphlett supplied assists.
- Campbellsville consistently tested the Brescia goal. Bearcats goalkeeper Laura Thompson made 13 saves, including seven in the first half, as the Tigers generated 11 shots before halftime and 17 afterward.
- Sydney Hall secured the clean sheet. Hall played all 90 minutes in goal and stopped Brescia's lone shot on target to earn the season-opening victory.
- The Tigers maintained pressure through set pieces and substitutions. Campbellsville earned seven corner kicks to Brescia's three and received goals from three players who began the match on the bench.
Campbellsville began applying sustained pressure during the opening half after Brescia had a shot blocked in the second minute. The Tigers forced Thompson into her first save on
Anita Arnadottir's attempt in the 17th minute and earned three corner kicks during a four-minute stretch.
Jolly entered in the 21st minute and immediately added another threat to the Campbellsville attack. After Thompson stopped her first attempt at 21:28, Jolly broke the deadlock in the 25th minute with an unassisted goal.
The Tigers continued to press after taking the lead. Thompson denied
Ella Palframan,
Selma Persson, and
Julia Ogren as Brescia kept the deficit at 1-0 through halftime despite Campbellsville's 11-2 advantage in shots. The Tigers put eight of their first-half attempts on target.
Campbellsville resumed its pressure after the break, forcing three saves during the opening 12 minutes of the second half. The Tigers doubled their lead in the 62nd minute after Helgadottir's effort struck the post and Smith converted the ensuing opportunity.
Smith struck again at 63:24. Thompson initially saved her attempt, but Smith finished the sequence for her second goal of the match, with Amphlett receiving the assist. The quick brace moved Campbellsville ahead 3-0.
Brescia produced its only shot on goal in the 73rd minute, when Hall stopped an attempt from Allana Colen Porto to preserve the shutout.
Matheis added Campbellsville's fourth goal at 80:26 before the Tigers completed the scoring at 83:09. The official scoring summary credited Matheis with the fifth goal while also identifying an own goal by Brescia on the play.
Campbellsville finished with 17 second-half shots and 10 on target while holding Brescia scoreless to begin the season 1-0.
