PIKEVILLE, Ky. — No. 14 Campbellsville University scored 13 unanswered points after halftime and held University of Pikeville scoreless over the final two quarters to earn a 27-14 road victory Saturday evening at Hambley Athletic Complex.
- Justyce Law completed 21 of 30 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 15 times for a team-high 85 yards and two more scores. He finished with 371 yards of total offense, accounting for 80.1% of Campbellsville's 463 yards.
- Campbellsville controlled the football and the workload. The Tigers possessed the ball for 45:09, ran 71 offensive plays, and collected 23 first downs. Campbellsville converted 8 of 18 third-down opportunities and limited Pikeville to 54 plays and 15 first downs.
- The defense made its stand after halftime. Pikeville gained 262 total yards, including 107 on the ground, and did not score after tying the game with 3:43 remaining in the second quarter. The Bears managed three second-half points-producing opportunities inside Campbellsville territory, but the Tigers forced two turnovers and ended the final drive with the clock expiring.
- The Tigers found explosives through multiple targets. Easton Barlow caught three passes for 74 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown, while Solomon Stonebraker added a 43-yard reception and Andre Siler supplied a 34-yard catch. Campbellsville completed passes to 11 different receivers and averaged 9.2 yards per pass play.
- Jaysean Pritchard caught consecutive passes for 16 and 7 yards to finish Campbellsville's opening possession of the second half, with the latter restoring the lead. He finished with two receptions for 23 yards and the go-ahead touchdown.
- Jerrod Johnson affected the game in multiple ways. Johnson led Campbellsville with eight tackles, including one for loss, and forced and recovered a third-quarter fumble. He was also credited in the play-by-play with an interception early in the second half, while the return was recorded to Lincoln Philips, helping set up Campbellsville's go-ahead touchdown.
- Campbellsville closed the game on the ground. The Tigers rushed for 177 yards on 40 attempts, led by Law's 85 yards and Elijah Robb's 41 yards. Their final extended possession covered 57 yards on 13 plays and consumed 7:49 of the fourth quarter, leaving Pikeville only 1:48 for its last possession.
After the teams exchanged punts to begin the game, Campbellsville assembled an 81-yard scoring drive from its own 19-yard line. Law completed four consecutive passes during the possession before Robb gained 10 yards to the Pikeville 24. Law scored on the next snap, keeping the ball for a 24-yard touchdown that gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 7:42 remaining in the first quarter.
Pikeville responded with a sustained drive into the red zone, but Campbellsville's defense held at the 2.
Ousainue Gai stopped quarterback Alex Hatton for 1 yard on fourth-and-2, turning the ball over to the Tigers at their own goal line.
Campbellsville converted the stand into its second touchdown with a 98-yard drive spanning the first and second quarters. Law moved the Tigers away from their goal line with a 13-yard completion to
Caleb Austin, then completed passes to
Ashton Auker and
Troy Oliver as the possession continued. On first-and-10 from the Campbellsville 40, Law found Barlow for a 60-yard touchdown and a 14-0 advantage with 11:20 left in the half.
The Bears answered with consecutive touchdown drives. Quarterback Bryce Henson capped an eight-play, 70-yard possession with a 6-yard run, then scored from 8 yards out following a 52-yard drive to tie the game at 14 with 3:43 remaining before halftime.
Campbellsville's offense crossed midfield late in the half but was forced to punt. Law's 54-yard punt pinned Pikeville at its own 8 with three seconds remaining, sending the teams into halftime tied.
The Tigers regained momentum early in the third quarter. Campbellsville forced a turnover on Pikeville's opening possession and took over at the Bears' 41 following an 18-yard return by Philips. Law converted third-and-1 with a 3-yard run before connecting with Pritchard for 16 yards to the 7. The pair connected again on the next play for the touchdown, putting Campbellsville ahead 21-14 with 10:24 remaining in the quarter.
Campbellsville then drove 79 yards in 12 plays, reaching the Pikeville 9 before a missed field-goal attempt kept the margin at seven. The Tigers regained possession three plays later when Johnson forced Amon Williams to fumble and recovered the ball at the Pikeville 24.
A penalty pushed Campbellsville back to the 31 and created third-and-17, but Law broke through the defense for a 31-yard touchdown on the final play of the third quarter. The extra-point attempt was blocked, leaving the Tigers ahead 27-14.
Campbellsville recovered an onside kick to begin the fourth quarter and quickly moved into scoring position when Law found Stonebraker for 43 yards. Pikeville blocked the ensuing field-goal attempt, but the Tigers' defense forced a punt after allowing only 20 yards on the Bears' next series.
Taking over at its own 12 with 9:37 remaining, Campbellsville used a 13-play possession to drain nearly eight minutes from the clock. The Tigers ran on nine of the drive's final 10 plays and advanced to the Pikeville 31 before turning the ball over on downs.
Pikeville reached the Campbellsville 20 on its final possession, but the clock expired with the Bears still two scores behind, completing the Tigers' 27-14 road victory. Campbellsville returns home to face Webber International University at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Finley Stadium.
