Athletic Training Student Opportunities
The Campbellsville University Sport Medicine Department encourages students who are interested in "applying what they have learned" to seek out the opportunity to gain experience within the Athletic Training Room. Please note that Campbellsville University does not have a CAATE approved Athletic Training Education degree, however, we encourage students wishing to pursue a degree in a related field to seek out this learning opportunity.
While in the Athletic Training Room students receive a hands-on education relating to medical documentation, medical terminology, injury evaluation, illness evaluation, rehabilitation techniques as they relate to specific injuries and most importantly, experience in developing relationships with a patient. There are several ways to start your Sports Medicine Experience. Please check out each opportunity and submit the recruitment questionairre.
If you have further questions please feel free to contact Derek Port, Head Athletic Trainer at djport@campbellsville.edu or Scott Baughman, Assistant Athletic Trainer at sbaughman@campbellsville.edu
Work-Study/Work-Ship Opportunities
These opportunities are based on your FAFSA information. After you have completed the FAFSA it will be determine whether or not you are eligible for Federal Financial Aid in the form of a Work-study or a Work-ship grant. This opportunity is hour limited (your hours of work are limited by the amount of money you receive) and may not be beneficial to you if you are looking to get more hands-on education. The work-study and work-ship opportunities will limit the time spent within the Athletic Training Room to times when clerical work and maintenance work is needed. With this position you will learn more of the medical documentation and medical terminology aspect of Sports Medicine.
Performance Grant Opportunities
These opportunities are not as directly related to your FAFSA as the work-study and work-ship positions. However, they will affect the amount of grant received. This will all be determined when you apply for and receive acceptance into Campbellsville University. The Sports Medicine Department at Campbellsville University disburses Performance Grant based on performance, experience and desire to learn. The Performance Grant Opportunity allows for the greatest amount of hands-on learning. If you are chosen to receive Performance Grant, you will be expected and encouraged to learn as much as you can. As a freshman/first year student you will learn the ins and outs of the Athletic Training Room, such as taping, medical documentation, medical terminology and basic anatomy as it relates to injury and illness. This first year is used to determine your interest levels and your interest type. After the first year, your limits will be based on the classes you have taken and your desire to increase your hands-on education. Performance Grant can increase or decrease based on a continuous check-list that has been set up to maximize your learning experience. If you reach certain goals, you have the opportunity to increase your performance grant. If you do not reach certain goals, there is less opportunity to increase your performance grant and it may even decrease to give someone else an opportunity in the Athletic Training Room.
Volunteer Opportunities
We will never turn away interested students. If you are unable to receive both the work-study/work-ship opportunity and the performance grant opportunity, you still have the option to volunteer. However, you will drive this opportunity. If you decide that volunteering is the way to go, you will be designing what you get out of the experience. The Sports Medicine staff will set up hours that you will come into the Athletic Training Room. During those times it is seen that the "you get out what you put in" theory drives the students. You will be required to go through the check-list just as in the Performance Grant Opportunity, however, you must drive yourself to complete it as there are no rewards other than your own education. There have been several students succeed at higher levels than the Performance Grant Opportunity, but there also have been students who have not been able to succeed at this opportunity. Again, your desire to increase your hands-on learning will drive this opportunity.
