DES MOINES, Iowa –
Chuck Sharon becomes the fourth Tiger to win an NAIA Wrestling National Championship after he beat No. 6-seeded Zach Linton of Doane University, 10-3, on Saturday night in the 184-pound championship match.
Sharon now joins Davion Caston (133), Tommy Pretty (133) and Zach Flake (141) as NAIA National Champions.
The native of Smithfield, Virginia is a three-time NAIA All-American and is also the fourth, three-time NAIA All-American in program history. Sharon finished second at the national tournament last season and eighth in 2016.
In the championship match, Sharon got off on the front early on and took a 6-1 lead in to the second period. He looked for a pin in the opening period, but picked up four near fall points to extend the lead.
After allowing Linton just an escape in the second period, Sharon held a 6-2 edge heading into the final period of regulation. The senior did not let up in the final stanza and grabbed a 10-3 decision after earning a point for riding time.
Sharon caps off his season with a 38-2 record and ends his career with a record of 108-23.
As a team, the Tigers placed 11th overall with 45 points and was half a point outside the top 10.
Grand View University won its seventh-straight national title with 171.5 points, followed by University of Cumberlands in second with 107 points. Williams Baptist College placed third overall with 86.5 points.
